A Glimpse Into the Bootmaking Process After a boot is removed from the dryer, the welt (outer portion of the boot sole) is sewn around the toe portion of the boot. Once that is sewn on the excess leather is trimmed & the craftsman removes the tacks holding the boot to the last.
