My first piece for @baseballpro is up, Statcast analytics that we can use in fantasy (and also as baseball fans) baseballprospectus.com/article.php?ar…

As hitters start catching up, pitchers who can alternate the shape of similar offerings and create a wider variety of quality looks will become more valuable

There is a machine that can replicate every pitch thrown in MLB -- down to the mph and RPM. And hitters can use it in batting cages during games. @Alden_Gonzalez with the story of the Trajekt Arc, the latest weapon to try to keep up with elite pitching: espn.com/mlb/story/_/id…

Driving long distances to watch Zack Wheeler starts since 2013

Bat tracking is exciting, things I am most interested in: -how much aging hitters have left by comparing current max swing speed to prime max swing speed -swing paths: pitchers use bat path data to design gameplans to pitch around opponent bat path -in-season fatigue/injury

Part of the reason pitcher injuries are exploding is because injury diagnosis is better, in the past pitchers would pitch through pain, have their velocity/stuff erode, and there would be no explanation

Job alert: We are looking to hire content/editorial freelance help at DraftKings. Weekend and night availability required. If you think you’d be a good fit, DM me your resume!

RHP should be tunneling 4 seamers and cutters gloveside to lefties more often, throwing a 4 seam away and then coming back with the cutter in does not tunnel as well. This has been a theme for Gallen this postseason, too many armside 4 seamers to LHB and it’s been getting whacked

Tha Carter: World Series edition.

This emphasizes why having multiple fastball shapes can be so valuable, it was most notable watching Zack Wheeler play a 4seam and 2seam fastball off each other, the 2seam runs in on righties and the 4seam stays true and carries vertically. Makes it tough to barrel adjust

“We’re going to swing as if the baseball was was three baseballs higher coming in”🤯 Incredible insight about the Rangers gameplan in Game 7 facing Christian Javier who has a 4-Seam with the 13th highest ride in the MLB. It just shows how important a gameplan is and how you may…

I am here to root for Zack Wheeler for 20-25 batters and then the rest of this place is on their own

Nice night for a ball game

Senga has one of the lowest whiff rates on 97+ mph 4 seamers because the pitch lacks strong backspin despite the high velo, but that fork/4 seam tunnel is just totally lethal, if you sit on the FB he kills you with the fork, if you look fork the FB stays true for a called strike

Kodai Senga's 4th and 5th Ks. Impressive outing from Senga, who really didn't have his best stuff tonight but battled.

Strasburg has the best change up I’ve ever seen, he retires throwing about 4,000 career CH where batters hit .142 with a .408 OPS against it. 2-seam change and his key detail was to take his index finger completely off the ball to kill backspin

Thoracic outlet syndrome has killed the careers of two of my favorite pitchers to watch, hopefully there is an advancement in medicine to treat this in the future

In May there were reports that Scherzer’s scap injury would have to be managed all season. He’s clearly been compromised by it all year, breaking ball shape has declined, fastball life isn’t the same. The fact the Mets were able to get what they got from TEX for him is a huge win

Max Scherzer gave up 3 runs in the first inning of his Rangers debut (via @NBCSWhiteSox)

There are so many incredibly talented baseball players in 2023 and the talent pool keeps growing and growing, expanding opportunities for more players to become big leaguers would be great for the sport

On expanding to 32 teams, Rob Manfred said Oakland Tampa situations need to be resolved, as he's said in the past. Then, once that happens, "I hope pretty shortly thereafter we would put together an expansion committee and start talking internally first about the issues"

I think it’s pretty clear Scherzer’s upper back/scap is still bothering him, he’s not consistently finishing the breaking ball and leaving a lot of breaking pitches up

LeMahieu Launch 🚀

9th in stuff+ in 2022

What was it last year

Following up on this theme, the Mets are 22nd in stuff+ as a team, Mets starting pitchers are 24th in stuff+. The Mets have thrown the fewest pitches 96+ mph in MLB. The Mets badly need an injection of arm strength/velo at the major league level

The Braves have a lot of hitters that look to hit the ball in the air hard, it’s why they hit so many HR, and to beat that you need gas up in the zone. The Mets are 29th in % of fastballs thrown 96+ mph (7.6%). League avg is 19.8%. There just isn’t enough gas on this staff

What a sweep feeling for the @Braves! #Walkoff

This is sad but maybe an extensive 12-month rehab allows Jake to reset his entire body and come back healthier in more areas than just his elbow

MLB INJURY ALERT: Rangers SP Jacob deGrom will undergo Tommy John surgery, per @Evan_P_Grant
