I am very sorry to learn of the death of John Prescott. I shadowed him and his Department when the Conservatives were last in opposition. He was all of his public image: pugnacious, unrelenting and determined. In private, I found him a decent and kind man. A political giant has…

Tory MPs still champion their record on education. I wonder which bit they are most proud of: Crumbling schools? Falling standards? A 'lose, lose, lose' SEND system? Disadvantaged children lagging behind? Labour will fix the foundations & break down barriers to opportunity.

The idea that the vote was going to be close appears to have been predictated on Trump losing the popular vote but still squeezing through on the swing states. The BBC is reporting he’s currently 5m votes ahead in the popular vote. So it would appear the pollsters got it wrong

Any debate about the use of lethal force by the police in this country needs to take this table into account. Britain is not America, and viewing our issues through the lens of the American experience is foolish and importing their culture wars

And in many cases the police are doing exactly the right thing. The table of shootings is mostly a sea of zeroes. But for example, the "3" for London here in 2017 is the shooting of the London Bridge attackers - which saved lives. (7/8)

My ballot paper arrived this morning and I’ve not decided how to vote. Also how would the people sending the papers know if someone is a Kemi or Jenrick voter?

It would appear that those voting for Kemi in the Conservative leadership election have had their ballot papers emailed to them from CCHQ early BEFORE the Thursday GMB debate between @RobertJenrick and @KemiBadenoch There are no other words for this other than vote rigging/…

On Friday 4th October, the feast of St Francis, I was inducted as parish priest of St Joseph’s here in Hutton after making the profession of faith and the oath of fidelity. It was so wonderful to celebrate this new step with parishioners, past and present, friends and family.

The irony of this is that my children learned to swim in the pool of the local private school (which was described to me as one of the biggest rate payers in the Borough). My daughter has just started at a state school which is fundraising for an upgrade to their pool.

Our state schools need teachers more than private schools need embossed stationery. Our children need mental health support more than private schools need new pools. Our students need careers advice more than private schools need AstroTurf pitches. inews.co.uk/news/private-s…

Excellent piece by @ATabarrok on a truly mad set of laws and legal outcomes. The bit about retail staff specifically rejecting jobs in the warehouse without being paid "a lot more money" is v funny. *How* did the Tories not fix this stuff in 14 years? marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolu…

I quite like David David but on this I’m afraid he’s wrong. If it was “highly probable” that Letby was innocent then it’s inconceivable that a jury who spent 10 months listening to the evidence, examined by a KC, could have decided she was guilty beyond reasonable doubt

Sir David Davis says he believes it's 'highly probable' the serial killer nurse, Lucy Letby, is innocent. She is serving a life sentence for the murder of 7 babies & attempted murder of 7 more. Sir David explains why he believes there is 'more than reasonable doubt'.

A fantastic afternoon with a couple of friends and a reminder how lucky I am to live in an area with such wonderful villages!

Great to visit Herongate & Ingrave for their annual Flower Show. Some spectacular floral 🌺 entries, a band 🎤, stalls and a vegetable 🍆 🥒 🌽 competition. A classic village afternoon. Congratulations to everyone involved - especially Sheila Murphy. A great family occasion. 👏

I agree with Andrew. Politicians are allowed to enjoy their holidays.

Honestly, I'm no fan of Mrs Rayner but she's on holiday and Parliament is in recess. Someone explain to me why I should care that she's clubbing in Ibiza? 🤷
