TIL that Barrington Moore gave his good friend Herbert Marcuse $275k when the latter retired, to set him up in style. In inflation-adjusted terms, that’s a $2m gift — that’s a nice friend! (From @thelorenzom’s excellent dissertation.)
The man who wrote this paragraph should never be allowed to wrap himself in the banner of pedantry again
Great piece about the late James C. Scott, this is really good Feuilleton from @DissentMag dissentmagazine.org/online_article…
Yet when we came back, late, from the Situation Room, My smirk full, and my hair wet, I could not Speak to what their intent was, I was neither Living nor dead, and I knew nothing, Looking into the heart of light, the silence. Oed’ und leer vom Fluss bis zum Meer.
As a historian, I find Ta Nehisi Coates stumbles over the complexity of non-US racial formations. For example, he calls the Confederacy “white supremacist.” Guess he’s never heard of this guy? Swarthy, descended from the dispossessed, fully integrated into top CSA politics.
A direct threat that Israel will reduce Lebanon, like Gaza, to rubble. A threat disguised as natural process "fall into abyss of destruction and suffering". This is what we, in the US are backing. theguardian.com/world/live/202…
“The Harris campaign continues to leak ‘hints’ that she might be different. But the communications strategy seems to assume that people are stupid.” —@_TimBarker
"In 2018, Jake Sullivan wrote that ‘Middle Eastern instability has been a feature, not a bug, of the system since the fall of the Ottoman Empire’. What does it mean when someone who compares himself to Dean Acheson writes a sentence like that?" newleftreview.org/sidecar/posts/…
"De-escalation through escalation" is the type of thing this dude would say
"Scott’s work was, in the end, deeply romantic. And like so much romantic political thought, it contained a promiscuous and labile mixture of radical and conservative themes." Enjoyed this essay on the late James C. Scott in @DissentMag dissentmagazine.org/online_article…
Smith claims that fracking "directly supports" an estimated 123,000 jobs in PA, and that this is an understatement b/c it excludes multipliers. Too bad the report he cites already incuded direct, indirect, and induced employment. ourtime.substack.com/p/noah-smith-w…
Among the many things I like about this piece, it's the recognition of Ed Friedman and his time working with Scott that pleases me most. Their forward to the reissue of Barrington Moore's "Social Origins" is key to understanding what Scott was up to (also, I just really love Ed).
It's almost a cliche to point out that the late James C. Scott had complicated - perhaps even "problematic" -politics. Careful discussion of Scott's trajectory, like this by @thelorenzom, is much less common. Worth your time. dissentmagazine.org/online_article…
“…title of Seeing Like a State was entirely fitting: in over 400 pages overflowing with historical case studies, Scott never offered a single example of seeing like a Fortune 500 company.” Obituary of the irreplaceable James C Scott dissentmagazine.org/online_article…
James C. Scott as defender of a petty bourgeois utopia. Lorenzo McClellan has done the best historical work on the origins of his ideas, and here is a taste. dissentmagazine.org/online_article…
“As [Scott] told me, ‘It would be a fair critique [of my work] that, in a sense, having started out falling in love with the revolution, and being disillusioned, what I forget is how awful the ancien regime was in all these places.’” dissentmagazine.org/online_article…
I was there and this guy was shouting equally appalling stuff for ages
zionist at grand army plaza says to pro-palestine protestors “bye bitch, bye bitch. we’re gonna fucking kill you all. we’re gonna finish hamas. we’re gonna finish hamas.”
