House of Lords was packed today with Tory peers as the Bill to abolish hereditary peerages is debated. They oppose change. Never saw so many when poverty, homelessness debated Need elected second chamber, must not be a clone of the Commons or use First-Past-The-Post system.
One million UK pensioners skipping meals amid winter fuel benefit crisis. Hospital/GP queues will lengthen. How many will die in one of the richest countries? 1% has more wealth than 70% of the population combined, but govts don't want to upset the rich theguardian.com/politics/2024/…
The Brexit Curse: UK tap water safety at risk, testing labs shut down, water companies are unable to use products to clean it. EU countries to share laboratories, UK products can't be tested abroad; must be tested in in certified UK labs, there are none. theguardian.com/business/2024/…
UK Govts bend the rule of law to protect finance industry. Despite evidence, the FCA hasn't investigated frauds. HSBC pleaded guilt to “criminal conduct” and money laundering in the US, UK govt covered it up. Bank frauds from 2002 not investigated leftfootforward.org/2024/11/whatev…
“Any politician who campaigned for Brexit cannot now legitimately complain about the increase in migration. They are directly responsible for it.” - @gavinesler
And now for the most Daily Telegraph article ever written...
Keir Starmer declares war on benefits Britain. War on the poor, sick, old, disabled. 16.1m have disabilities, 2.8m chronically ill, 6.34m await hospital appointments, 16m live in poverty. No war on corporate welfare, no wealth taxes or redistribution. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…
Last night only THREE peers in the House of Lords called for public ownership of water. That was me, Jenny Jones & Natalie Bennett (Green Party) out of a membership of 827. Public ownership officially opposed by Labour, Tories & LibDems. Most people want to end the scandal.
"Inheritance tax relief" introduced in 1984 turned "owning agricultural land into having a licence to avoid inheritance tax," Professor Paul Cheshire tells #PoliticsLive It led to a "four-fold increase in the price of agricultural land", he adds bbc.in/3YTSbQ4
Moody’s downgrades Southern Water debt to junk, pushes it closer to default. Controlled by private equity vampire Macquarie, looted through dividend extraction. £6bn debt, wants 91% price hike, dumps sewage in rivers/seas. No end to abuuses. theguardian.com/business/2024/…
More than a million pallets of unusable Covid PPE costing more than £8 billion have so far gone up in smoke Billions were spent on unusable protective equipment, with priority contracts handed to associates of Conservative ministers bylinetimes.com/2024/11/14/mor…
Good purchasing power for the masses is a necessary prerequisite for building a sustainable economy. The UK budget does not do that. Tax policy being used to perpetuate poverty/inequalities. Please watch this short video for critique and policy options youtube.com/watch?v=Kd_Pwd…
Thames Water getting £3bn new loan at 9.75%. To pay nearly £300m int a yr. If loan for 10 yrs that is £3bn int +£3bn repayment = £6bn. 16m customers to pay extra £6bn in bills i.e. £37.50 a year because of debt. Thames debt already £16bn. Customers pay for mismanagement.
Thames Water confident over £3bn funding lifeline. Will result in higher debt, interest payments and bills. Hedge funds and private equity moving in. Hope to get control of company, pick its carcass. Betting on govt bailout. news.sky.com/story/thames-w…
Think our irony meter has just broken 🤯
Streeting to use league tables to identify poor performance hospitals. Ridiculous. How will he take account of lack of staff, equipment; poverty, ageing population in an area? He will send “turnaround teams” i.e. force privatisation of services. theguardian.com/society/2024/n…
Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak refused to provide 10,000 extra beds to the NHS that would have helped during and after Covid. Because they wanted the NHS to pay the private sector instead. We must never trust these people with our health again.
Wessex Water fined £500,000 for dumping raw sewage in rivers and killing thousands of fish. Are you eating fish from polluted rivers/seas? Puny fines are no detterant. Sewage dumping boosts profits, exec pay. Must end profit motive. Nationalise water. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
