Hands up who in England voted for district councils to be abolished. Where is our opportunity to (paraphrasing the Scottish claim of Right) decide the form of government best suited to England's needs?
Delegation to executive mayors, without democratic legitimacy of a prior approval referendum, is a substitute for fair funding, and genuine political autonomy over policy design and resource allocation for English local government. This is sham #devolution. bbc.com/news/articles/…
It's great that @mhclg are occasionally specifying England instead of saying Britain or 'the country' Keep up the good work lads and lasses and we'll stop dropping #sayEngland and #ThatsDevolved replies.
Great analysis by my colleague @sarahroutl of today's assisted dying vote, through a devolution lens. The good old West Lothian Question threatening to rear its head!
The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill passed its second reading by 330 votes to 275 this afternoon. Adding a devo spin to the @instituteforgov’s analysis, I’ve been taking a look at how MPs across the four nations voted today and what this could mean for its future. 🧵
Why on earth are they voting?
How Scottish MPs voted on assisted dying in England & Wales - For: 17 Against: 29 Didn’t vote: 11 (two ministers who were travelling & SNP)
What does new @Conservatives leader @KemiBadenoch have to say about England? Not a lot. She's only mentioned England once on X, fewer times than she's mentioned Scotland and Wales and far fewer times than she's mentioned Britain. The only time she's mentioned England 👇
As someone who remembers the controversy over English Votes for English Laws, it’s also striking that there’s little controversy over Scottish MPs voting on this legislation, which could pass or fall by a small margin SNP MPs are expected to abstain
Schools in England can now apply to be part of the rollout. #SayEngland #ThatsDevolved
Breakfast clubs aim to give children and families the best start to the school day, making sure kids are ready to learn. Schools can now apply to be part of the rollout 👇
Back in 2010, IPPR's Michael Kenny & Guy Lodge surveyed MPs on their attitudes to the Barnett Formula. 62% said it was unfair, yet 14 years later nothing has been done about it. Screencap from 'The English Question: The View from Westminster'
Most people in England don't identitify with a 'region', they identify with a city, town or county. There has never been much support for regionalisation. Read what the political scientists who study it say.
Of general interest (and particular interest to @EnglishRadical, @MarkPerryman, @CarolineLucas, @AnthonyBarnett, @ThreeAcresACow).
That's certainly how devolution from Westminster should look. How local and regional government works within England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland should be up to the governments of those countries.
This is how devolution should look. It’s that simple…
"England doesn’t really exist as a country" It doesn't exist as a state. It's still a country and a nation. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England
Actually England doesn’t really exist as a country. The country is now the UK. England is what we call a constituent county or a “home country”. The reason Strathclyde isn’t at the Euros is because it was fully absorbed into Scotland!
For years, the children’s social care system in England has been neglected. That ends now. We are reforming it, so every child across England has better chances in life.

Delivering better buses is one of my driving goals as Transport Secretary. Our £1 billion funding boost will deliver record levels of investment in buses for communities up and down England 🏴
