Great news for East Anglian fen orchids! Back in 2008 the total population was estimated at 1000 plants at 3 sites. A cold winter decimated numbers in 2018, but in the 2019 season they have bounced back to 13,000 plants at 8 sites. All thanks to great conservation work 👏👏👏

Colonising London, one alpine plant at a time...

Growing plants from cold, high and very wet @wildhaweswater in the the hot, dry and sea-level @kewgardens is not easy, but we are using techniques like mass autumn plantings, airpots, deep gravel mulches, crevice sowing of seeds direct into the cracks. #kewalpine

Lovely. Haweswater holds the accolade of having more species of fern than any other RSPB reserve, with 30 species on site. And four species of clubmoss, fir, stag's-horn, lesser and alpine.

Some of the beautiful mosses and ferns @RSPB_N_England @WildHaweswater Need help to ID the 1st, Huperzia selago, Fir Clubmoss, scree specialist Cryptogramma crispa, the Parsley Fern, and Diphasiastrum alpinum, the Alpine Clubmoss, and indicator of Alpine ecosystems #kewalpine
