Nearly every job I’ve had for 10+ years has involved social media in some capacity and I still want to flip a table every time someone says “don’t take it personally,” as though it’s admirable to abandon one’s personhood. An Internet that allows people to care must be possible.

Did you know that Ontarians can vote in every municipality where they own property? So a landlord can vote more than once, but a permanent resident can’t vote at all.

The misconception that there is no sound in space originates because most space is a ~vacuum, providing no way for sound waves to travel. A galaxy cluster has so much gas that we've picked up actual sound. Here it's amplified, and mixed with other data, to hear a black hole!

From now on, I will be issuing ‘the land doesn’t acknowledge you’ statement every time I’m asked to open any event anywhere in the world.

What is the opposite of FOMO? Validation in saying no? A woman I trained with, grew up with in elite sport won an Olympic medal—an achievement I was also pushed towards for years. I am so relieved I rejected that goal. This is a year could have gone to the Olympics? Wow. Nope.

Protests are erupting in several Russian cities tonight against Putin's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, along with attempts from police to forcibly suppress them. Here's his hometown of St. Petersburg. I'll be threading videos below as I find them.

Greetings from a Finnish leftist! The international situation has apparently left many people in the English-speaking countries confused. I write this thread in the hopes of sharing a perspective I believe is widely if not unilaterally shared in Finland, most leftists included.

it’s been nearly 3 months since i was arrested at gunpoint on Wet’suwet’en Yintah, and i’ve been following a lot of the news coming out about recent events on the territory 1/

Before this massive show of force, policing this occupation was costing $800,000 a day. That was before the huge influx of officers we’ve seen these past two days. So on day 22- that’s at least $17.6 million dollars.

It’s actually quite telling that they’ve never prepared for — or possibly even witnessed — common aggressive police strategies for ending civil disobedience.

Clearly a lot of people have never been part of a demonstration ended by police before. Can't tell you how many expressions of shock and astonishment I've heard. "I can't believe this," "this is the craziest thing I've ever seen," "it's like we're in China" etc.

I know people are slow to recognize this, because we are all in different stages of shock, but I'll like to bottomline this for us: we are now effectively in a police state. Not sure how long it will last, but that's where we are. Here are some clues/facts: /1
