This may well be nonsense (it was ever thus...); but PM Johnson seems to have a plan. It gives me no pleasure to say this, but it will be difficult to stop. 1/

I understand that this book now exists in physical form. It reflects years of collective reflections with a fabulous group of co-authors: Hugh Collins, ACL Davies. @vmantouvalou I hope the reading of it is as enjoyable as the writing of it.

Less than a month ago. And I don’t see many Democrats wishing that Biden was still their candidate.

I shouldn’t venture into US politics - but the whole discussion about Biden, and whether he should or should not stand down, seems bizarre to me. Thread. 🧵 1/10

So, last night in Bristol, and across the country, a mass of people with legitimate concerns about the security of their communities, took to the streets, and made their point without resorting to violence. It’s not difficult.

Unusual to see the Mail, Express, Times join the Guardian with all choosing the same image of anti-fascist demonstrations.

It's not often I do this because journalists and newspapers need to make a living, but this is so good from @iandunt (and urgent) it is worthy of a wider readership. It is both angry and absolutely on point. archive.ph/1XhpV (free to read)

The police know of 100+ protests plannedfor tonight. I wonder if any of those who have used the ‘the rioters have legitimate concerns, but the violence is unacceptable’ line, are today urging protestors to be peaceful? And if not, why not?

This particular piece of polling is massively important. Assuming it's accurate, consider some of the implications... 🧵

Who and what do Britons think are responsible for the riots? % saying each have a great deal/fair amount of responsibility The rioters: 88% Social media: 86% Far-right groups: 74% News media: 69% Immigration policy in recent years: 67% Tommy Robinson: 57% Tory governments from…

Very interesting - and, after spending time scrolling here, reassuring - polling here.

How have the public reacted to the recent riots? Only 7% of Britons support the riots, 8% have sympathy for the views of the rioters, and just 12% think the riots are justified yougov.co.uk/politics/artic…

Bigots who’ve built entire careers inciting precisely the evil we’re witnessing did not ‘warn’ of it. The only honest ‘warnings’ came from people who explained what would happen if we kept giving racist liars newspaper columns, TV & radio slots & season tickets for Question Time.

Phil Syrpis Reposted

We need to have some clarity about the causes of the rioting over the past few days. A 🧵about the rioters, the instigators (two fairly distinct groups of people), and the processes leading to the current unrest. 1/21

Having a hard time accepting that the guys who brought you #brexit the biggest act of self harm in 🇬🇧 history & now extoll the virtues of setting fires to libraries, homes &mosques as expressing legitimate concerns over migration really have the nation’s best interests at heart

I do feel like maybe the Home Secretary’s husband shouldn’t be involved in interviewing her on breakfast television, like I do think that’s fair to say

Proustian moments at Le Café Brexit. New post on my Brexit & Beyond Blog. Why some once familiar Brexit models are being discussed again, the prospects of them being adopted, and some more immediate issues. I was going to wait, but I think this is actually important right now. Stay with me... 🧵 Cognitive bias is real. I'll start with that. Unconscious bias, however, is rubbish.

'They came with their hoods up. They wanted, in my view, a fight.' @PaulBrandITV shared a video of the abuse him and his team received from the 'thugs' protesting in Southport.
