A guide, created by #OpenAI, for #students in properly using #ChatGPT (or other AI tools) in their essays, etc. It is a good start, and the genie is well out of the bottle, but this strikes me as leaning into content, i.e. what to write vs how to write it. Narrows search?

Open AI has shared this resource that seems to be aimed at supporting #AcademicIntegrity A Student’s Guide to Writing with ChatGPT openai.com/chatgpt/use-ca… @OpenAI

What a great word. Up there with kleptocracy.

And today’s word is….

US households have changed over the last 60 years. The starkest change is the change in relative size of married parents. More parents are unmarried and more people don’t have kids.

People who fall for conspiracy theories have a greater tendency to detect patterns. But those patterns aren’t real. They’re random and illusory: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ej…

A good friend of mine from high school in Jeddah once harbored deep hatred for Jews. When he visited Abu Dhabi, I arranged a meeting with some well-educated Jews living in the country. Over a four-hour session, they addressed all his questions and dispelled many of the…

This is beautiful #evolution #genomics work looking at one of largest and oldest living organisms, a triploid aspen clonal tree. One superlarge individual. Clearly avoiding Muller's Ratchet (genetic decline of asexually reproducing species en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muller%27…)

New preprint up! We sequenced hundreds of samples from across one of Earth's oldest living organisms - the Pando aspen clone - to understand how mutations accumulate and spread in long-lived clonal organisms. Our results were…surprising. 1/30

The denuding of #universities has been a 25 year process of defunding over successive @AusLiberalParty governments. @AustralianLabor not in power long enough to plug the hole (and not a priority). Investment of 1950s/1960s/1970s nearly exhausted. Rebuild? Starting when???

Deeply depressing to see this evisceration of a profession to which I've dedicated the better part of my life 🫠 It's not only jobs disappearing but decades of passionate and diligent scholarship and teaching lost, with devastating consequences far into the future

This is amazing. 62% of Gazans support a 2-state solution, 19% support a 1-state solution with equal rights, and only 9% support removing Israel and having a Palestinian state from the river to the sea. Gazans are way more moderate than British/American student protests!

I wish there were a Nobel prize that could be awarded to Gisele Pelicot.

You mean mass redundancies, the evisceration of entire disciplines, rampant managerialism, and the fanatic embrace of a profit-driven model of scholarship haven't fostered a climate of open inquiry and big ideas? Who could've known?! 🤷‍♂️ theguardian.com/australia-news…

A year (!) of writing in one tweet: Terror is always wrong. Revenge is not a strategy. A child is a child is a child. Release all hostages now. Cease fire. Let the aid flow. Neither the Israelis nor the Palestinians are leaving. Without hope for a shared future this does not end.

Is #AI capable of #comedy (beyond hallucinatory faux pas? Maybe ..... The article discusses a system, trained by a comedian, that takes a stab at the task. Perhaps at the level of the quip? Perhaps comedy writer's assistant. See a role for speech writing ia.acs.org.au/article/2024/c…

While acknowledging that there are degrees, and decent line managers can make a difference, this is the reality of modern-day #academia

This is the unseen side of what happens when you are constantly reminded that you are behind with administration and teaching activities. I'm 37 with depression, anxiety and stress, all linked to work. I thought about whether everything was worth it last week.
