A “baseloadist’s” nightmare. Why are modern power systems run like this, you might ask? Well, because solar and wind are now the cheapest and cleanest energy sources. And coal and nuclear the most expensive. And coal the dirtiest.

Any 20 year trend analysis of @Eskom_SA performance will conclude these failures of old kit will continue & a turnaround is unlikely or extremely difficult. So wake up South Africa! We need a massive & urgent increase in new power - R1 trillion (US$55bn) by 2030. Focus. Focus.

#POWERALERT1 Due to the breakdowns of eight generating units on Tuesday evening, Stage 4 loadshedding will be implemented from 16:00 today until 05:00 on Thursday. Thereafter, varying stages of loadshedding will be implemented until Saturday evening

The private sector is gearing up to rescue South Africa from power cuts with a huge pipeline of generation projects under advanced development. Now the state has to play its part by getting transmission out of a failing Eskom & allowing investment to flow m.engineeringnews.co.za/article/renewa…

2.7GW PV, 1.7GW wind, 1GW power storage, in tandem with the existing Eskom pumped storage, delivers the same dispatchable power, with 7% additional energy, as the average output from Koeberg nuclear power station over the past 5 years. It does so more predictably as well.

There is decent consensus that (a) flow batteries are an ideal solution for grid scale energy storage; (b) VRFBs are the most mature flow battery technology available. To this we add: vanadium is present at high grade and scale in SA to support.
