John Borrero and I interviewed Drs. Jessica Nastasi and Nicole Gravina about their latest JABA pub, "Breaks and productivity: An exploratory analysis," (Nastasi, Tassistro, and Gravina, 2023). I hope you enjoy it! behavioralobservations.com/do-breaks-cont…

Shocking. Said no reasonable scientist. Ever. 🤣 #poppsychology It is nice to see an objective review in a high-profile journal.

In a NEW PAPER out today @NatureHumBehav we show that some of the most popular strategies for increasing happiness are not well-supported by rigorous scientific evidence. A thread. twitter.com/NaturePortfoli…

"Averages are applicable only to reducing very slightly varying numerical data about clearly defined and absolutely simple cases." Claude Bernard from his Introduction to the Study of Experimental Medicine (1865/1957, p. 135) #behaviortwitter #statistics

Ha! Truer words have never been spoken.

I hope everyone understands that the phrase “clinically proved” means “not proved.”

Contingency Management for energy use. This is not new, but it is important. Financial incentives work for a variety of target behaviors and can be much cheaper than the alternatives. #behaviortwitter #incentives #climatechange nytimes.com/2023/06/29/opi…

History myth: Mary Cover Jones is widely regarded as pioneer of applied behavior analysis. Fact: Her 1920s work in anxiety counterconditioning is rightly seen as foundational—but not, it seems, by recent behavior analysts. In one survey, only 2 of 48 BCBAs were familiar with her.

Tim is one of the finest scientists I know. And Matt is perhaps the greatest disseminator in the field. A great combination.

Psychology isn't physics, it's loosely connected theories, imprecise predictions, significance based on rejection rather than confirmation. It isn't ready for hypothesis testing. Psychology needs better methods, not better statistics. #behaviortwitter journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.117…

Keeping with the anxiety theme today, this NYT article does a nice job describing how exposure therapy helps and how we need to do a better job getting people access to it. #behaviortwitter With Anxiety on the Rise, Some Children Try ‘Exposure Therapy’ nytimes.com/2022/11/21/hea…

This is a thoughtful and timely article--just in time for final exam season. Not only is "test anxiety" a questionable "disability" and and suspect reason for accommodation, treating anxiety is one of the things psychology does best (exposure therapy, systematic desensitization).

My latest column for @SkeptInquirer takes on the issue of whether test-anxious students should qualify for different examination arrangements and summarizes a new study that sheds some light on the question. skepticalinquirer.org/exclusive/what…
