Barbara Lee cast the only vote against invading Afghanistan after 9/11 and said in an interview: “I got death threats. I had to have security round the clock, couldn't travel. Someone actually called my home phone and shot guns into the voicemail.”

Running for mayor would subject Barbara Lee to something she never really encountered in her career: harsh opposition and personal attacks. trib.al/OLYXNGD

Pressure is mounting y’all! “Sometimes we overlook the power that we hold” says Julian HS student Catlyn Savado. True!! Our power is unstoppable. #SchoolsOurStudebtsDeserve #CTUStrong she gets a standing ovation!

The Chicago Teachers Union is stepping up pressure on CPS to settle a new contract. By all accounts, much work remains. District officials speak of a big "gap" between CTU proposals & CPS finances. A neutral fact-finder will weigh in next month. chalkbeat.org/chicago/2024/1…

“What does it mean that the release of the hostages should be unconditional? But stopping killing Palestinians is conditional. There are acceptable conditions to stop the mass killing of Palestinians…14 months and we are still debating if a genocide must be stopped.”

🙋🏾‍♀️ Again, for the slow pokes in the back: libraries and librarians, counselors, smaller class sizes, fully funded fine arts, a sports program where there are busses to take athletes to competitions. #SchoolsChicagoStudentsDeserve

.@stacydavisgates and the CTU don't care about what's best for CPS students, only what's best for their personal power, wealth, and control.

When you look at education reporters in Chicago now, how many of us are Black? It's really a problem when MOST Black kids go to public schools in the city.

I feel like not enough people know that Trump’s Border Czar Thomas Homan was given the Presidential Rank Award by Barack Obama for immigration “enforcement and removal” and that Trump actually deported fewer people than Obama in his first term??? Why aren’t we talking about this?

Just over 1 million Chicagoans voted during the general election on Nov. 5. According to the Board of Elections, as of the latest count (which is not expected to change much at all now), 796,621 people voted in our school board races — so close to 80%.

We have excellent reporting from the New York Times that wealthy donors shaped the messaging of the Harris campaign to downplay anti-price gouging action. That was much more important to knee-capping Harris than putative damage of supporting anti-monopoly (which Harris in fact…

It’s fine as far as it goes but that’s not very far. It’s a law school-based movement, it under-delivers as a worldview and runs up against voters’ main concern of rising prices. Republicans flirt with it to be heterodox whereas Dems over-index on it and think it’s populism.

I've said it before and can't believe I have to say it again: No amount of rebranding can change the fact that Rahm Emanuel’s political career has been an abject failure—neoliberal centrism is exactly the wrong direction for the Democratic Party. inthesetimes.com/article/no-rah…

*Begging* people to remember the entire “a few bad apples” proverb. Just listened to Bob Fioretti on WBEZ answering a question about police “there may be a few bad apples, but a few bad apples don’t destroy the whole bunch.” Literally the exact opposite of the meaning. 🤯

This! We have the resources to solve problems but people with power pick which ones get attention and which don't. Which problems become eyesores and which are quietly solved.

📣 Ahem. Chicago is a global city. The 3rd largest city in the entire USA. Chicago is the economic engine of the Midwest. If Ford, GM and Stellantis are too big to fail surely a city that attracts international talent and global investment is, too. Such a bad take.

Commentary: I have yet to meet an Illinoisan living outside Chicago who wants to pay more taxes so the state can continually bail out the city of Chicago. trib.al/zgobLfq
