Just blown away! So cool to see my thesis work in action. Secondary fission is due to the tidal stresses from the primary onto the secondary. Fantastic! See Jacobson & Scheeres (2011) for details.

Lucy, you’ve surprised us again New images from the #LucyMission’s first asteroid flyby show that a satellite, already unexpected, is made of two objects – a contact binary. This is the first time we’ve seen a contact binary orbiting another asteroid. go.nasa.gov/3QwiebO

Why put obviously incompetent people in charge of big, important things? Because they know that under normal circumstances, they could never have reached such positions of power. This makes them loyal to whoever put them there.

This is over-and-over again my experience. My imposter syndrome tells me that I (and my students) must just write bad Python code, but our C/C++/Fortran ports just run 100+ times faster, every time.

My MATLAB code computes the 2nd Vassiliev invariant for a 100-vertex trefoil knot in 0.026 seconds. My Python code does it in 2.89 seconds, 108x slower. Time to learn C?

Sadly probably not visible tonight in mid-Michigan due to clouds. However, it should still be visible for a couple weeks (comets can change in brightness suddenly and without warning).

ICYMI: What's a comet? There is more than the aurora borealis visible in the skies this weekend. The comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas will be visible tonight at it's peak! ☄️ spr.ly/6013UA38l

We used to joke that "to be relaxed in northern Europe is to know that the trains will run, the offices will be open, etc., and to be relaxed in southern Europe is to know that while the trains may not run, the offices may not be open, etc., life will be good anyways."

The best thing my Italian upbringing taught me is how to enjoy life. I will lounge on a sofa sipping espresso with no guilt about being “unproductive”. I will light candles, make risotto, and romanticise my dinner. The secret to La Dolce Vita is believing that you deserve joy.
