52 years ago today, law enforcement shot and killed two students on Southern University's campus during a peaceful protest. Denver Smith and Leonard Brown had their whole lives ahead of them. These stories matter. And they still hold lessons for us today. wwno.org/podcast/bitter…

A few weeks ago, @Danny_McArthur_ and I were invited to witness a “rematriation” ceremony as the Atakapa-Ishak/Chawasha tribe had a sacred mound known as the “Lemon Trees” mound returned to them. It was an amazing thing to see. Check out our piece on it: wwno.org/coastal-desk/2…

I first met Steve as a student. But I received the great honor of gaining his friendship as a colleague when I returned to work at UF. He will be missed but his legacy lives on in the 100s of young journalists he’s prepared to enter the field. Enjoy retirement my friend!

. @SteveRussell850, UFCJC Sports Director for ESPN Gainesville and WUFT-TV will be retiring at the end of 2024 after nearly 27 years at the College. Russell has been broadcasting Gainesville’s longest-running sports talk show, Sportscene, since 1998. bit.ly/3YjkJ5f

NEW: Telemedicine abortions have soared in Louisiana —they're 60% of all abortions — and one survey counted MORE abortions in the first half of 2023 compared to before the state banned abortions. Revealing new data in this latest for @WWNO wwno.org/public-health/…

At a school in Gretna, about a dozen first graders are sitting at their desks, laptops open and headsets on. The setup makes them look like tiny telemarketers. What an AI-powered tutor sounds like in one classroom as Louisiana rolls out new technology. bit.ly/4eFtxJv

When a storm blows in, it doesn’t just impact people — it can also throw birds off course or drive them farther inland. Hurricane Francine presented an opportunity to see rare species in unexpected places. Today on @LAConsidered, @aubriruth takes us birding after the storm.

For two years doctors have warned that this was their greatest fear. They believed women could die because of abortion bans. This is just the first case @propublica has found. It says it will publish another in the coming days.
