I used a specially modified telescope, over a terabyte worth of photos, and help from a total solar eclipse to create the most dynamic image of our sun I’ve ever created. This 375 megapixel image is a blend of science and art to demonstrate the chaos of our star.
SIGNIFICANT SOLAR FLARE DURING EXTREME GEOMAGNETIC STORM: As if the extreme geomagnetic storm weren't enough for space weather forecasters tonight, a significant solar flare is also occurring now too from the Active Region that is responsible for all the chaos closer to Earth.…
It's perihelion day, #Today. In Northern Hemisphere we're right in the middle of winter, but Earth is actually at its closest position to the Sun. Today the Earth is 5 million kilometeres closer to the Sun than it is are in early July. So why isn't hotter than in July?…
Humans now have a larger influence on the moon than natural processes such as meteoroid impacts, leading some researchers to declare it has entered a lunar Anthropocene newscientist.com/article/240718…
Before Johnson gives his evidence we should consider a few things: 1. Just how bad was the UK pandemic response? 2. How much could Johnson have affected this? 3. What was Johnson’s intent? 4. Was there any overt maleficence? Thread 1/n (buckle-up!)
I’d like to congratulate all Tory voters and Brexiters for this… We couldn’t have done it without you.
Another look at the full hall coronal mass ejection launched by yesterday's M9.8 solar flare. As expected, the plasma cloud is earth-directed and expected to arrive late on Friday, 1 December. Expect geomagnetic storm conditions after the cloud arrives.
A series of monster eruptions on the east-edge of the Sun today. These active regions will continue to rotate towards us in the coming days - so let’s see if the activity continues! #spaceweather (data: LASCO & SUVI)
And another update. 9 active regions numbered. Solar flux index increased on Monday to 157.
Fantastic colour and light at the Fratton Festival of Light parade tonight. Well done to everyone involved and for all the beautiful lanterns!🏮
A FUNDED PhD at the School of Engineering -University of Central Lancashire -Under Dr. @KomaliKantaman1, Professor @rwwalsh, Dr. Upka and Mr. Lorant’s supervision. Invite applicants from Remote Sensing, Coastal Vulnerability, Spatiotemporal Sediment Transport and GIS .

When I retired from DAMTP in 2017, I was given a garden bench. Now Cambridge University has just given me the title ‘ Emeritus Professor in Solar Physics’. Thanks to everyone who has helped and supported me along the way! @Cambridge_Uni @FacultyMaths @StEdmundsCam @STFC_Matters
Imagine that the universe is a cake. A very big cake, with many layers and flavors. The cake is expanding, because it is being baked in an oven that keeps getting hotter. Now, the part of the cake that we can see and taste is made of ordinary ingredients, like flour, sugar, eggs,…
Are you missing us? Sending you all festival vibes from the amazing @St magnus Cathedral & The Sun. We can't wait til next year! And do let us know your thoughts on this year. oisf.org/visitor-feedba… Photos Selena S. Kuzman @rwwalsh
I absolutely love this story........ It made me cry. "An 87 Year Old College Student Named Rose The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my…
Together we have broken the record!Over 14,000 of you visited the Sun during the @OrkSciFest,over 2000 more folk than in any previous venue. It's the 1st time The Sun has been in #SCOTLAND &in a #Cathedral, showing us what is possible when science, art&community come together.
Awsome to see the Aurora Borealis during @OrkSciFest at the Neolithic stargazing sight the Ring of Brodgar. Great being part of a program that featured the incredible Sun Exhibition at the St Magnus Cathedral. Thanks to @UCLan @STFC_Matters @Saint_Magnus @IoPScotland @rwwalsh
