A day to breathe deeply and ponder the small, the innocent, the enduringly beautiful.
Scotland AND Wales have banned snare traps but they still remain LEGAL in England. RT and LIKE this post if you agree they should be banned across the whole of the UK! Follow us to help @ProtectTheWild_
GOOD NEWS! A complete ban on the use of snares in Scotland will come into force on 25th November. Huge well done to all those who got this over the line!
Perhaps one of the most stunning insects globally, we have these sapphire tailed wasps (Chrysis viridula) living here in Britain! #insectweek @RoyEntSoc These are parasitoids and lay their eggs in the nests of Odynerus spinipes potter wasps (mud structure in photos). If…
The lovely snail nesting solitary bee, Osmia aurulenta on the N Cumbrian coast today, emerging just as her preferred pollen source, Bird's Foot Trefoil comes into flower. When that finishes she moves onto Restharrow providing they haven't been burnt to a crisp in a June heatwave.
Tiny solitary wasps are beginning to emerge up here and often roost in the very slim tunnels of my observation box. They like taking nectar from the small inflorescences on umbellifers. ID appreciated @DavidNotton or @Liam_M_Crowley
As night follows day, when my apple tree & Green Alkanet are in full flower, the sun is shining, the Red Mason bees (Osmia bicornis) will start nesting, and not before. @Kate_Bradbury
First time I’ve seen Anthophora plumipes/Hairy-footed Flower Bee outside my garden! Nesting is much later up north than in the south and females here still searching. N Cumbrian coast yesterday. @StevenFalk1
Is this Colletes cunicularius @Eucera @StevenFalk1 @DavidNotton ? If so, it is now 43 miles north of most north western record at Drigg Dunes on NBN. Plenty of gorse and dandelion, will check if creeping willow grows here. About 20 females but none carried pollen. Many Sphecodes.
So excited to be able to finally spill the beans on this project that I worked on with @Minibeast_Wild for Nat Geo/Disney! There are simply not enough documentaries that feature the world's smallest heroes and it's always amazing to have the opportunity to tell their stories.
Have you ever wondered what really goes on inside the lives of Earth's miniature heroes? Well, you're about to find out — and it's all real! Inspired by, A Bug's Life and narrated by Awkwafina, #ARealBugsLife is streaming January 24 on @DisneyPlus 🐜🌱
Shadowed late nesting Wool Carder/Anthidium manictum bee from 19/08- 6/09. She slept in NN obs box in back gdn w/ her Stelis p. cuckoo, rarely slept in her nest in front gdn. Took 18 days to seal one brood cell. How did they behave with you @Kate_Bradbury @EDoorish? #mindofabee!
Very much worth reading. Insects have no voice, and this article gives them one.
A worth reading article by @LChittka published in @scientificamer scientificamerican.com/article/do-ins… #insectwelfare #insects
So happy to see insects highlighted and celebrated at a Chelsea Flower Show …at last! Bravo to @ProjGivingBack for sponsoring the garden.
#CountdownToChelsea It's been fantastic working with the craftspeople on the #RESGarden - @cake_industries @BakerConsultant @waterartisans @LAlandscapes @BreffniMcGeough @urbanmeadows_ @rewburynob @HortusLoci @cammccreadie @Bloom_PR @ProjGivingBack @tommasseyuk #RHSChelsea
This evening, we joined landmarks nationwide to ‘Light up the Nation’ as part of the BBC’s Coronation Concert. Did you miss it? Here's a taster of our spectacular drone show by @Skymagicdrones @edencommunities #LightUpTheNation #CoronationConcert
Here's Miss Green 915 for you. Once you enable recognition of individual bees, they reveal their "personalities", with individually different work schedules, learnt preferences for particular flower locations and plant species, and differences in learning ability and temperament
Marsh Harriers @RSPBMinsmere are still bringing in nesting material to build up their nests. Carrying a reed this long is just showing off though! @RSPBEngland @Natures_Voice
