Keri-Sue contacted me because we have the very worst thing in common. One doctor even said her anxiety was making him worse & she should stop taking him to hospital. I wrote about her depressingly familiar experience theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2…

Orientalism 101: They learned to say Kyiv according to Ukrainian pronunciation within days but for almost 50 years insist on eye-ran. It’s absolutely on purpose.

begging white people to stop saying “eye-ran”

Having my white 6th-grade teacher yell at me for not doing my homework in front of the whole class. When I said I had surgery, she said that it was 2 months ago and no excuse. I was on the heart transplant waiting.

“what radicalized you?” probably my basic human empathy

PayPal is updating their ToS to let themselves give your data to merchants starting Nov & they're banking on people not knowing to opt out, SO to opt out before they start: go to Settings >Data & Privacy > Manage shared info >Personalized shopping, & toggle that shit off

the fact that #BreonnaTaylor is not even trending is fckn nuts considering the judge officially is blaming her boyfriend for self defense against two cops who admitted to falsifying a fake warrant to illegally at their home in the first place. wow

Too many people working in jobs they should not. This guy shouldn't be anywhere near a job where he has to deal with people.

I cannot stress enough how much this judge deserves to lose his job and ideally be subject to the same level of fear and ridicule in front of his peers.

I am baffled at the number of organisations and people who are unable to get my name right in an email - even though my email address is my name. Henz, Heinz, Herz, Ronald and Donald. It shows just how "detail oriented" and "caring" they really are. 🤷‍♀️ I guess it's a good filter.

When @Microsoft support calls you and 40 seconds into the call it terminates with "We are currently closed. Business hours are..." Quick resolution, 10/10. Btw., that call terminated an ongoing call from Microsoft support. Wires crossing all over the place.

Wow, I had no idea Kamala was this based - L

Personalized pricing isn't new (hello credit scores!), but new technologies (better & more data collection, better algorithms) have turbocharged and expanded it across the economy. It's time to take a close look at whether this should stop and today's study is the 1st step. 6/6

3. This obfuscation is the key to their final act--charging you as much as they possibly can. No wonder consumers are ticked. As @LeeHepner says, personalized pricing allows companies to eliminate the public price, & the fairness, transparency & predictability it provides. 5/6

2. Next it's time to isolate you. You wouldn't put up with paying more than the guy in line behind you for the same item, right? Surely not! But online, companies use dark patterns to slot you into a custom interface. You have no clue what anyone else is paying. 4/6

Phone battery low? Good, you'll need that Uber ASAP & will surely eat the surge price. Are you pregnant? Time to juice the price of ginger ale. As @ddayen explains, there's now a cottage industry of pricing consultants to help companies with this. 3/6 prospect.org/economy/2024-0…

1. Personalized pricing starts by spying on you, which is why @ZephyrTeachout is right to call it surveillance pricing. In order to figure out how much money they can take from your wallet, companies first need to take a peek inside. Is it pay day? Great, you are flush! 2/6

Today the @linakhanFTC & @FTC launched an inquiry into personalized pricing, the latest frontier in price gouging. A personalized price might sound nice, but it is actually a 3-part corporate strategy to spy on you, isolate you, & overcharge you. A 🧵1/6 ftc.gov/news-events/ne…
