Heads up: Microsoft Office, like many companies in recent months, has slyly turned on an “opt-out” feature that scrapes your Word and Excel documents to train its internal AI systems. This setting is turned on by default, and you have to manually uncheck a box in order to opt…

In addition to sponsoring the .NET Foundation, @jetbrains has also now made @JetBrainsRider and @WebStormIDE free for noncommercial use. I'm a fan of JetBrains, and you now have no roadblocks to try them out (or start your next big idea). blog.jetbrains.com/blog/2024/10/2…

One of my new all time favorite images of #Pittsburgh. The fog this morning was incredible, and I had a feeling that the sunlight would cast a shadow of PPG Place on that fog from the West End Bridge. Luckily the conditions worked out, allowing for this amazing scene to unfold.

Career advice: You will go further in life with parameter passing than with string concatenation.

BBSs were epic. Ward and friends were absolute pioneers.

Ward Christensen, BBS inventor and architect of our online age, dies at age 78 arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/1…

This is fascinating history. The last time ccTLDs had this issue, vanity TLDs did not exist. I wonder if .io will be transferred to the vanity space? Would prevent a lot of chaos.

If you have an .io domain you should read this. When the British government announced last week that it was transferring sovereignty of an island in the Indian Ocean to the country of Mauritius, Gareth immediately realized its online implications: the end of the .io domain…

The best #GenAI models will not succeed without good data. That’s why data engineers are even more critical today. This guide shares practical guidance on using AI tools for faster code dev, implementing data governance & more. Read here 👇 dbricks.co/4cepi5v

Congrats on 30 years of being the best content in the space!

Sneak peek preview of the upcoming @CODEmagazine cover. The cover is AI generated, and the article it goes with is also an article about AI generating stuff (a game in this case). Pretty cool!

Minion Wars 🙃

#mincup is back. In years past, my criteria were the mineral's value to humanity, but this year my criteria are (1) the green one, (2) weirder origin story.

Things are slowly getting exciting at the #MinCup24: #Titanite and #Calcite are currently tied. Many of the classics have already been eliminated and will be back next year. Is this an omen for #calcite? Which of the two will take on #Rhodochrosite?

There's a little bit of everything in this view of #Pittsburgh from today. The Goodyear Blimp. A barge. Boats on the river. And mixed in there, a seaplane. Absolutely the first time I've ever shot a seaplane, a barge, and a blimp in the same photo. What a day in the Steel City.

LinkedIn is now using everyone's content to train their AI tool -- they just auto opted everyone in. I recommend opting out now (AND that orgs put an end to auto opt-in, it's not cool) Opt out steps: Settings and Privacy > Data Privacy > Data for Generative AI Improvement (OFF)

This month marks 10 years of @CocoaPress! What started as a 2014 intro to engineering class in high school has become a small business with employees and hundreds of printers sold🥹 Join my trip down memory lane as I recount working on chocolate printing for a full decade❣️ 1/n

My take-away from this is that S3 and Azure Blob storage have gotten crazy fast at I/O.

BYOC 🤝 Confluent 🎉We’re excited to share that we acquired @warpstream_labs! Now, our customers can get streaming data any way they need it – self-managed, fully managed, or bring your own cloud (BYOC). Get the full scoop in @jaykreps’ blog → cnfl.io/3ZjKt3o

Understanding "clbuttic mistake" is definitely a generational indicator.

Billion dollar idea: Forget eyeglass frames with streaming camera, make frames with an airtag in them. And haptic feedback, so when you're searching everywhere and they're actually on your head, you get the thump you deserve.
