The Illegal Migration Act was so wildly expensive because the govt effectively barred itself from deciding asylum claims from small boat migrants, but couldn't send them to Rwanda It was, and remains, the most insane law I have ever seen. This is from May: inews.co.uk/news/politics/…

Actor and disability campaigner Liz Carr warns of “terrifying” prospect of giving some terminally ill people the right to an assisted death If UK politicians approve “the giving of lethal medication to certain people” she says “a moral divide” will have been crossed

Yes. This is based on the myth of our own independence and autonomy. But that’s not how life is lived. We’re dependent each on the other, and need to be able to depend on one another. And that is a core value of liberal democracy.

If only it were that simple. What of those who are already vulnerable through disability, poverty, isolation or ill-health? What of issues of coercion and abuse? The right to choose becomes too easily a duty to die.

Very important line here from @LouHaigh on road safety: "We treat road safety in a way as if it is somehow a natural accident. If the number of people being killed or seriously injured on our roads, were being killed in any other way, we'd be treating it as a pandemic."

I wonder why Israel don't allow journalists into Gaza?

Today entering Gaza City. The ruins of life. A donkey laying dead attached to a cart with someone’s possessions. Clusters of people crossing to the South, with too much to walk with under the sun and given the length of the journey. A man carrying a white flag in front of his…

This is absurd and incredibly disappointing. A subsidy to pollute, to keep our air quality poor and to keep the status quo in terms of transport emissions. We can do better @UKLabour

The government will protect working people and those in local communities by freezing fuel duty next year. This is a tax cut worth £3bn and will save motorists almost £60 a year.

But it is a lot wider than most normal cars. If you want to drive a 'luxury' large car you can, but you can't park it in this spot, you will have to find a 'luxury' parking spot and you will likely have to pay for that privilege. It's your choice.

Should just go the whole hog and point out the cap was a nice headline grabber for the previous government but is a pretty stupid policy. Same price to go down the road into the next town, as to go Leeds - Whitby.

The nation-wide £2 bus fare cap will go up to £3, Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed

If we had time, we could do dozens of threads like this excellent one, explaining how rail journeys all over the country will be made quicker, more convenient and more reliable by #HS2. If MPs and stakeholders understood this, it would never be cancelled.

Travelled from Reading to Manchester with our 2 kids. Train we booked cancelled north of Bham, and busy, so had to go an hour later. Seat reservations meant we had to keep changing seats. Not a good experience with a 2yo child. Few know #hs2 would transform this route. Here's how

Dear @Keir_Starmer Phase 2 of HS2 is the cheap bit which has very significant returns economically. Why is this so hard for London based treasury to understand?

Forget the nonsense about reviewing costs on Phase 1 of HS2, today's real news is that this government has announced in no uncertain terms that it will not be progressing with Phase 2 to Crewe, Manchester or Leeds. Craven. Short-sighted. Hugely damaging.

What you actually seem to be doing is making sure the bit that benefits the south gets finished, but scrapping any benefits to the north.

If the Conservatives rip up rail plans for the North, they may as well rip up their "plans" to level up. Labour would deliver HS2 and the Integrated Rail Plan in full. To do anything else would be a complete betrayal of the North. #PMQs

Do Western political parties never learn from each others' mistakes? The Conservative party's plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda cost over £450m and proved a total flop. Uganda has an even bigger existing caseload of refugees than Rwanda. theguardian.com/world/2024/oct…
