Dear #waleg, If the One Seattle Comp Plan update goes through as it stands, please introduce legislation to nuke it from orbit on day 1 of the upcoming session. Signed, Seattleites who want to increase affordability, protect the environment, & end residential segregation
Kamala Harris: "In many places, it is too difficult to build, and it’s driving prices up." Barack Obama: "Clear away some of the outdated laws and regulations that make it harder to build homes." Bruce Harrell: "Nah, let's keep the NIMBYs happy instead."
City to host Washington Hall information session on proposed 20-year growth plan and zoning changes. Capitol Hill blog reports: capitolhillseattle.com/2024/11/city-h…
Our next Zoning Update Information Session is tomorrow, Wednesday Nov. 6 at Madison Middle School's gym (3429 45th Ave SW). Bus routes are 50, 57, 128 and there is a parking lot/street parking. We hope to see you there!
"House Bill 1220, a law the state legislature passed in 2021 that requires cities to specifically plan for the expected income levels of future residents" The fact this wasn't already part of municipal planning is some seriously classist sh*t especially in "progressive" Seattle

Laura from @sharethecities & @shirleyswirley from @jp4all_org will be joining us at our Building Tenant Workshop on 11/20 at 6pm to talk more about zoning, its impacts on renters, and the comp plan. Check out the 🧵 below & register for the workshop here: beseattle.org/Nov2024
The problem with this analysis from @fakedansavage is that it doesn’t mention that we have had 3 chamber of commerce backed mayors who have upheld nimbys whims on zoning Murray, Durkan, & Harrell. This isn’t a left nimby issue in Seattle. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sea…
Don't forget to vote peeps
Housing needs to be affordable, safe, healthy, and accessible. That’s the tweet.
Please take this survey to help make Seattle’s Design Review program more inclusive, equitable, and responsible to community needs. Your responses will help the City better serve our neighborhoods and communities. Survey closes 11/27/24. Please share: surveymonkey.com/r/designreview…
The idea that a process for hassling builders about what color bricks they use is responsive to inequity is kind of gross, actually....
Add your voice here. If equity is a concern, design review is not an effective venue for n’hoods to voice political issues of displacement, homelessness, economic vitality and housing affordability because these are all way upstream of one individual building in the city.
The weird thing about Seattle is that this same image would be used by some as a Greedy Developer Upzone War on Cars Oooga Booga Boogeyman image
Some good news from a pro...
How does the new draft for Seattle's middle housing look? Much better, compare (in blue) where we were in May, to the latest proposal (orange). Multiple paths to higher density including add't incentives for add't units, stacked flats, affordable housing and congregate housing.
Just a reminder to some of the Freds out there that it is 100% legal to use any sort of wheelchair or other mobility device in any bike lane or multi-use path in Washington, and that all mobility device users should feel welcome and safe in the bike lanes.
Bike lanes aren’t only for bikes. Fairly often I see people on mobility scooters using them.
"I hope to see these reforms expand citywide!" Ecrasez l'infame!
Took some time away from budget planning to celebrate the signing of our Design Review Exemption bill for projects downtown. This bill would cut red tape, increase much needed housing production, and streamline our permitting process. I hope to see these reforms expand citywide!
Great thread Like many people, my first apartment was the humblest & most downscale Over time as I progressed in my career I moved to fancier homes, freeing up less fancy ones
When people move into the new housing, they vacate their previous home, allowing someone else to live there. This creates a chain of move-ins and move-outs that ultimately results in cheap old housing being freed up, caused by the new development. /2
Stay tuned for a workshop and talking points from us and others over the next several weeks! Sorry we couldn’t get to it sooner — we all have day jobs!

Seattle's street tree rules say a tree can't be planted within 30 feet of intersections to avoid driver sightline issues Meanwhile the city puts big tree-like things made of trees bang on intersections all over the place 🤷♂️

Seattle: planning like it's 1965...
It bums me out that Seattle's OPCD is promoting the "autocourt" building configuration where homes are built around a parking lot. I'd rather live in a city that drops the parking requirement, and promotes homes built around a shared courtyard, garden, play area, anything really
Zoning in theory: regulations to keep homes away from sources of pollution. Zoning in practice: regulations that force all new housing to be built right next to major sources of pollution.
We’ve created a monster! Drone shots for our 573 units in Burbank:
