This position didn't exist prior to Big12, I don't believe. I understand it was basically created to get Skyler on full time (he was working with the team on contract). IMO, this is one of the biggest fruits of P4 conference affiliation.
Skyler Mayne isn’t talked about enough. He trained several Utes in the offseason during their 2 Rose Bowls. Then Kalani Sitake hires him & BYU is knocking on the CFP door. If there’s a secret sauce to winning, what Mayne does is a big part of it.

Look I’m gutted for Brant Kuithe. But come on. This is not malicious by the defender at all. Nothing here even resembles any type of a penalty. Injury likely came from cutting off the inside leg which isn’t ideal in certain situations.
I asked several posters to point out just one time there was a hold like this that wasn't called. Now I see why no one responded.
This seems to be the running theme from the opposing viewpoint. So, for fun I looked into it. I've looked at every pass play in the entire game. Every complete route on the all-22. Nothing even remotely close to defensive holding occurred against either team. Nothing anywhere…
