Spot-bellied Eagle-owl is a large sized forest owl, 1st described to science from Nepal, hence its scientific name Bubo nipalensis. Owls are threatened due to illegal wildlife trade, habitat loss due to development activities and ecological degradation driven by humans (PC: FPS).

An injured Barn Owl has been rescued- my colleagues trying to find out the cause of injury. Road accident most likely but also there is a possibility that the bird got entangled in wires. The owl was brought to us at Lumbini and being looked after.

Short-eared Owl, of nearly 2 dozen owl species in Nepal, this is the only regular winter visitor. It is seen hunting its prey over grasslands and healthy farmlands. Found in all continents except Australia. In some countries including Nepal population has declined (PC: FP Sherpa)

Brown Wood Owl is found along the Himalayas in the midhills and foothills. The Himalayan subspecies is known as 'newarensis', a Nepali name. Gokarna Safari Park used to be the ultimate site for this species in Kathmandu Valley. A great bird to see in the field (PC: F. P. Sherpa)

Owls are very cuddly and tend to have large extended family! Spotted Owlets sit tightly together on a branch outside their nest cavity. From lowlands to midhills, where humans live and leave a space for them, they will be there! PC French Pemba Sherpa
