Today, I’m excited to share with you all the fruit of our effort at @OpenAI to create AI models capable of truly general reasoning: OpenAI's new o1 model series! (aka 🍓) Let me explain 🧵 1/

I'm looking for two more strong REs/SWEs to work on the future of o1 at @OpenAI 🤖 If you're excited about reasoning and AGI, fill out this form: jobs.ashbyhq.com/openai/form/oa… (also, I'll be at NeurIPS if you want to chat about🍓)

I’m looking for one more strong research or software engineer excited to work on (ideally solve) reasoning, joining my team at @OpenAI 🤖 Send resume to michelle.kim@openai.com

AI skeptics: LLMs are copy-paste engines, incapable of original thought, basically worthless. Professionals who track AI progress: We've worked with 60 mathematicians to build a hard test that modern systems get 2% on. Hope this benchmark lasts more than a couple of years.

I love seeing a new eval with such low pass rates for frontier models. It feels like waking up to a fresh blanket of snow outside, completely untouched.

3/10 We evaluated six leading models, including Claude 3.5 Sonnet, GPT-4o, and Gemini 1.5 Pro. Even with extended thinking time (10,000 tokens), Python access, and the ability to run experiments, success rates remained below 2%—compared to over 90% on traditional benchmarks.

I've heard people claim that Sam is just drumming up hype, but from what I've seen everything he's saying matches the ~median view of @OpenAI researchers on the ground.

Sam Altman says the pathway to AGI is now clear and "we actually know what do", it will be easier to get to Level 4 Innovating AI than he initially thought and "things are going to go a lot faster than people are appreciating right now"

I've been using ChatGPT search regularly and honestly love it!

🌐 Introducing ChatGPT search 🌐 ChatGPT can now search the web in a much better way than before so you get fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources. openai.com/index/introduc…

I know that whether AI has anything to do with physics has been relevant recently…while this cannot comment on that directly w/o breaking the laws of physics — it was filmed in May — it was still very fun chatting w/ @gradypb & @sonyatweetybird about what physicists bring to AI!

From invisibility cloaks to neural networks: listen to former @Sequoia AI Fellow and current @OpenAI researcher @danintheory’s journey from quantum physics to the forefront of AI on a new episode of Training Data.

The System 1 vs System 2 thinking framework has really helped me grok what’s happening in the reasoning layer in AI. h/t @polynoamial for first introducing me to this years ago and consistently believing in it and driving it forward. System 1 or “Thinking Fast” = fast…

Once a year, @gradypb and I sit down with our trusty AI collaborators 👾 and zoom out to the big picture on what’s happening in Generative AI. Here’s our 3rd annual take… 1: The foundation model layer of Generative AI (large, pre-trained language models) is stabilizing around…

Incredibly well deserved by @demishassabis, John Jumper, David Baker, and everyone who worked to make AlphaFold possible! This is hopefully just the beginning of AI aiding scientific research.

BREAKING NEWS The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 #NobelPrize in Chemistry with one half to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for protein structure prediction.”

We’re rolling out an early version of canvas—a new way to work with ChatGPT on writing & coding projects that go beyond simple chat. Starting today, Plus & Team users can try it by selecting “GPT-4o with canvas” in the model picker. openai.com/index/introduc…

This episode is worth listening to just to hear @hunterlightman crack jokes for 45 minutes

Our most exciting episode of Training Data yet 🍓🍰 @OpenAI’s o1 represents a major leap forward by giving models time to "think." Inference-time compute is the next big research frontier. Thrilled to have @polynoamial, @ilge, and @hunterlightman on the show @gradypb @sequoia

This is a great opportunity to talk directly with some of the researchers behind @OpenAI o1! Oct 3rd at 5pm PT.

My colleagues and I will be hosting a talk and Q&A session on 'Learning to Reason with LLMs' and the new OpenAI o1 model. Join us for an insightful discussion! forum.openai.com/public/events/… #OpenAIForum

I think both of you make good points. 1) The research behind o1 is absolutely innovative. The 🍓team has done amazing work and the ideas behind the figure @polynoamial posted would in time transform how people scale new AI systems. 2) While it’s great we published the blog and…

Those of us at @OpenAI working on o1/🍓 find it strange to hear outsiders claim that OpenAI has deprioritized research. I promise you all, it's the opposite.

I’ve been lucky to work with @markchen90 since joining @OpenAI and there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s the right person to take on this role alongside @merettm

While today’s departures are tough, I’m incredibly excited and honored to lead research at @OpenAI alongside @merettm I truly believe that OpenAI is the best place to work on AI, and I've been through enough ups and downs to know it's never wise to bet against us.
