This is one of the most confusing times of the pandemic, w/ a firehose of new Omicron data (lots of fab work on #medtwitter putting it into context). In this (long) 🧵, I'll offer my take on how the new information is changing my thinking & behavior.(1/25)

I wrote a short post on the work we're doing to capture, create, and learn from robust, reproducible protocols in our efforts to make biology easier to engineer along with its overall importance (so we can have great hot dogs!) with homage to @ThisAmerLife .

This week on #ginkgobits, Peter gives us a general overview of how the #digitaltech team helps @Ginkgo on its mission to #makebiologyeasiertoengineer! ginkgobioworks.com/2021/12/09/in-…

The Synthetic Biology Young Speaker Series (SynBYSS) is accepting applications/nominations for virtual talks. Untenured faculty or those seeking faculty positions soon (grad students or postdocs) can apply by sending your CV to to Tae-Seok Moon (tsmoon@wustl.edu). #SynBio

Great lecture from Hamming on how to ensure you're concentrating on important work. Thanks for the link @Jonathan_Blow

For those interested, it's R.W. Hamming from "You and Your Research": cs.virginia.edu/~robins/YouAnd…

Interesting data to mine to find the activists/x-applying @jasoncrawford thread on precognition: Which individuals report early, which neighborhoods? Which neighborhoods have early reporting clusters? What are other semi-frequent events that test for early detection and action?

1/ When I lived in California, I was in a neighborhood with particularly unreliable electricity. There were often outages affecting the whole street.

Proud of the work from the team @StrateosLab If you're looking for your next challenge and are passionate about making science better, check out strateos.com/hiring/

Re: radical candor and getting feedback: it'd be great to request feedback based on specific metrics - read the article/meeting pre-read, in community for a time, etc., and if anonymous have feedback released based on response size/time. Hopefully, create healthier discourse.

As a starting point, I’d highly recommend Radical Candor (@candor by @kimballscott). It’s full of simple and effective advice to get you off on the right foot. (3/)

Listening to @MichaelHyatt case for sabbaticals, I was wondering about organizational health if sabbaticals were randomized and mandatory. Aside from benefits to person and productivity, you'd have better teams, reduced bus factor issues, and great communication/process.

The questions I get most often from PhD students are about what’s is like working in biotech. So, here are some of my observations on the industry that I wish I’d known in grad school (Note that everyone’s experience is different, so YMMV). #biotech #career (1/)
