Looks like 2024 is off to a good start! After two years, the definitive version of this story is out! The process was long and extenuating but definitely worth it. Of course, we didn’t leave things as they were, and some updates were made to the original manuscript (a short 🧵)

The master bank of our CRISPR libraries consists of >22,000 bacterial glycerol cultures. My coworker Ilan Margalith studied the impact of temperature (-80°C vs -20°C), glycerol (15% vs 50%), and freeze-thaw cycles (1x vs 30x) onto viability. Results: chatgpt.com/share/6733819e…

“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

For some fun experiments with colorful bacteria we look for chromoproteins that are not (strongly) oxygen-dependent - do you know if this exists? 🔴🟠🟡🟢🔵 We have the palette of @ATinyGreenCell which is a fantastic tool but requires (lots of) oxygen for really bright colors...

Did you know that bacteria remember their past for many generations? In this new preprint from us (@VillaniAlexis and Senen Mendoza) and Banin lab (@ShmidovE ), we reveal the "how?" and "why?" underlying a long-standing mystery in bacterial memory. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Microplate readers from Tecan (Infinite Nano) or Agilent (Synergy H1) for microbial growth / killing assays - would you have a preference, and why?

Fantastic to see the recognition of Nora who has worked with Enea @phagemuffin in our team for her high school graduation! We had many great students, but Nora's ambition to push it further to succeed in national and international science fairs has been unique. 🧬🏆🚀

Nora Artico, a high school student , discovered previously unknown viruses capable of combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria. At just 20 years old, she was recognized and honored as a young scientist. (news in German) Read about it here ➡ bajour.ch/a/muenchenstei…

Exciting news! More diversity added to the BASEL phage collection 🧬. Check out the preprint 👇

Preprint alert 🚨! I present you the second and final manuscript on the BASEL phages! 36 new deeply characterized phages from viral groups that were so far mostly terra incognita - and all infect the E. coli K12 lab strain with easy tricks. 1/12 tinyurl.com/3xdt65f5

A good positive control has the power to say "it's not you, it's the experiment." It's no fun when an experiment fails, but it helps to know it's not because you did the experiment wrong but because science just doesn't work that way. And it frees you up to try other approaches.

Do a nice thing for your lab mates today. Everyone deserves some positivity in their day, and it's probably not going to come from their experiments.

I really fucking hate this trend in tech/fin circles that disparage the massive effort it takes to earn a PhD. It's a decree of YEARS of training, to the point where one literally writes a book on their expertise. These bozos think knowledge generation is trivial and trivia...

The value of a PhD in 2024 is approaching $0.00

Mitochondria arose through an endosymbiotic event that occurred some 1.45 billion years ago, when a bacterium entered another cell. In the centuries that followed, genes in the mitochondria were stripped away and shuttled into the host cells' nuclei. Importantly, some of those…
