Prescribed psychotropic drug withdrawal and iatrogenesis can be so complex, disabling & misunderstood that it should be a specialized field in medicine.

It seems @rcpsych has taken down the tweet promoting this CPD link to deprescribing, how interesting, anyway here is the link to the CPD e-learning content: bit.ly/3UCmLfH

Great that @rcpsych has put out a CPD podcast about hyperbolic tapering/deprescribing with Prof Taylor @DavidTa23968240 and myself. Hopefully it will become embedded as a core skill. A few further developments are likely to help push this out in the NHS as a whole too....

Does it not concern people that withdrawal effects from psychiatric drugs are so devastating - such as akathisia - that people are seeking euthanasia to escape them?

Lets prescribe drugs that are proven to increase suicide and violence, have a government black box warning to vulnerable people in a dark place in life. Someone thought this was a good idea… & our medical establishment follows blindly

Post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (PSSD) has been added to the SNOMED diagnostic codes internationally so that it can now be recorded by doctors as a diagnosis. Hopefully this will help the system to determine the full extent of the issue. @PSSDNetwork @DrDavidHealy @TonyAvery1

The solution to rising distress in young people caused by “intergenerational inequality, global instability and the rise of social media” is not more antidepressants but prescribing rates have tripled in 10 years bit.ly/3MZzncq

Misdiagnosing antidepressant withdrawal as relapse can lead to: - Polypharmacy of psychotropics - False belief that antidepressants are required long term/for life - New misdiagnosis such as FND, TRD etc All can lead to further iatrogenic disability.

The invalid biological model of psychiatry assumes that mental illness is a result of a malfunction in the brain and not a result of psychosocial factors. It is the difference between saying: “There is something wrong with you,” and, “There is something wrong in your life.”

My response to difficult life events was normal. My distress & despair wasn’t a medical disorder. I didn’t have a chemical imbalance which could be rectified by a medication. I regret sharing my vulnerability with a psychiatrist who pathologized my humanness, which led to injury.

If someone shares their experience of antidepressant withdrawal with you - please listen and try to understand. Far too often their experiences are unheard, dismissed and not believed. Validation can help ease their suffering. Be kind.

Why can't we get a govt warning like this for SSRIs? There are lot more people harmed by SSRIs than fluoroquinolones. Why can't we get recommendations to not prescribe SSRIs for non-severe conditions?
