For the last couple of days, transactional email from my app have been sent through my own SMTP service. A dumb idea overall, but it seems to work (most of the time 😅)!

Spamhaus' approach to API is really interesting. They use DNS as a key-value store. Need to lookup an IP or domain? Just check the TXT record for <domain>.dbl.spamhaus.org to see if it's listed as a spam domain. It's super fast and pretty much every email service uses it.

Excellent article about the relatively new practice of talk therapy and the dangers of introspection. I highly recommend any of my followers who aren’t crypto bots give this a read.

Today, we’re often advised that true health requires intense self-reflection and therapy, with an emphasis on looking back. But this perspective is actually quite modern. Ancient literature warns against looking back. You don't have to look back lindynewsletter.beehiiv.com/p/you-don-t-ha…

Still skeptical, but there’s a lot of folks now posting on the butterfly app. This time it doesn’t look like the big migration of the insufferables to 🐘 that only made X better. (My handle is the domain linked in the profile)

I'd love for Kamal to have the option to NOT build images. Docker build/push is the easy part. It's the no-downtime deployments, secret managements, rollbacks etc that Kamal excels at. The fact that it does build & deploy inseparably is a hindrance. #rubyonrails #rails

I was excited to upgrade to Kamal 2, but hit a Catch 22... I need to deploy an accessory (image server) with SSL. Kamal-proxy doesn't support SSL for accessories, so they recommend creating a separate deployment. But with a separate deployment, you can't skip build - and I…

when did you realise you may be watching the greatest show of all time?

Everyone says running your own SMTP relay is a stupid idea. I wanted to try anyway: - built a SMTP server in Go* - set it up to relay emails from Rails - and forward incoming emails to Rails - got blacklisted on Spamhaus for testing gmail error responses - this auto-banned my…

Love this, bold move

TIL about Lynis. Run it on your servers to detect potential security/config issues. Great tool if you're hosting apps on a Linux VPS (via Kamal, for example).

Looks quite close to what I do too. I also usually install and run Lynis to double check everything. Are you happy with Kamal?
