Idk how to put my finger on it but this is one of the most impressive videos I’ve ever seen. It uses assets from the latest Mortal Kombat game, which has been out for a while, but somehow it feels more real than most things. The animator got the body language etc really right

Europe is no better, amid growing racism and Islamophobia, turbocharged by anti-Palestinian hysteria. Key hosts such as Germany and Denmark have been exploring options for deporting Syrians, while legal avenues for asylum across the continent shrink by the day.

Then there are places we don’t hear about, like Egypt and Iraq, although together they harbor half a million Syrian refugees. Both witness an uptick in deportations. GCC states are meanwhile pushing Syrians out of their labor markets, through extravagant administrative fees.

Jordan, the third biggest host, has been praised for its adherence to non-refoulement and willingness to integrate Syrian refugees into the formal economy. But that is also coming to an end, as Western donors cease to subsidize work permits, pushing Syrians into legal limbo.

They are excluded from a government aid response that centers on Lebanese refugees. Worse, they repeatedly face extortion across the country’s web of checkpoints. Some are arrested or disappear. All struggle within a broken economy. Many make plans, upon arrival, to leave again.

Wherever Syrian refugees are, they face growing pressures to move again. And that includes, amazingly, refugees who return to Syria for lack of tenable options elsewhere. Syrians fleeing war in Lebanon, for instance, receive virtually no support or protection once back home.

Concise and comprehensive thread.

The Western model for handling refugee crises has evolved beyond "regionalization", in the sense of containing the spillover to neighboring states we paid off to assume that role. Now we’d rather refugees somehow disappeared altogether. Syrians are a disturbing case in point 🧵

Everyone is so surprised whenever Affleck is revealed to be quite intelligent. Why did you think there were so many candid shots of him out there looking miserable?

Didn’t expect Ben Affleck to have the most articulate and realistic explanation where video models and Hollywood is going

I started my newsletter under the old algorithm. 1/3 of my traffic came from Twitter. Now, it's very rare for >1% to come from this website. It's honestly not about echo chambers or partisanship. It's really simple to me - I WANT TO SEE LINKS IN MY TIMELINE.

I have one very, very simple gripe about this website. It suppresses any posts with outbound links. This used to be a great place to aggregate news sources. Scroll timeline. Click link. Read story. Back to the timeline. Repeat. You can't do that anymore.

watched the sunset today and dreamt about a place where you can just be free and safe, no requirements

was listening to Lauren Graham’s book and it made me realize if my life wasn’t so deeply influenced by media and politics, my interests would drift to an entirely different direction
