My essay "On Arepas and Whiteness" is in @pankmagazine’s #LatinxLit celebration! “One day last fall, as I scrolled through the Bon Appétit Instagram feed on my phone, the word arepa jumped out of the blur of curated photos and text.” pankmagazine.com/2020/08/06/lat…

I’m sorry but the Party becoming whiter is the Democratic Party and the Party becoming more multiracial is the Republican Party. This doesn’t align with the theories that academics, nonprofit activists, and race scholars trotted out in the 2010s and we need to grapple with that.

Trump is heading mentally downhill. Here he mixes up Venezuela and El Salvador.

Q: What do you think about what’s going on in Venezuela? Trump: It’s being run by a dictator. And it’s very safe. It’s safer than many of our cities

Maduro claims he'll "open two maximum security prisons for the younger generation involved in protests. There's not gonna be any forgiveness." Says inmates would be "re-educated" and prisons would become "production farms" where they would be put to work.

A rare clear-eyed explainer. Selfishly, I wish he’d take the paywall off, as there are so many misconceptions on why Venezuela’s economy collapsed, leading to the suffering of millions of people.

Venezuelan Election Numbers Rant

Columbia stats professor: the probability that the pattern of numbers reported by the Venezuelan government would happen by chance is “roughly a 1 in 100 million.”

Since the international "left" is so convinced Venezuela is not a dictatorship and the voice of the people is being heard with these elections, here's a thread: ✨poor/indigenous/racialized people protesting/voting against the Maduro government in the last 48 hours✨

Ok so…I’ve been both, and yes, they are different, and the difference is privilege. And for that reason I have no problem with the two words existing. The two experiences are not the same.

still don’t get how an “expat” is different from an immigrant

does anyone wanna be my writing accountability buddy? i.e. we send each other email/text updates and meet on some regular basis? i am working on revising a novel, already have a full draft.

Randomly found this today, from when I interned at The Carter Center in 2007. Rosalyn Carter was a badass. I remember she’d do tai chi outside everyday, in between fighting for mental health and other causes. An inspiration.

Over the last year, I only published 3 things and wrote almost nothing. It's been a tough year. But all 3 were nominated for awards: two for Pushcarts and one for Best of the Net. Crazy, but TY. I promise to write more in 2024.

We need causal inference classes in high school.

80% of Covid patients put on ventilators died. This is probably most shocking revelation unknown to the public.

I have been struggling to articulate the complex emotions I've been feeling since Saturday morning as a Jew, a liberal/progressive, a believer that Palestinians and Jews have a right to a homeland, to safety and dignity. A thread 1/

Fun news today!
