🔍 Can you spot the #seahorse? Longsnout seahorses are not known for their swimming abilities. They stay safe by blending in with their surroundings– in this case, yellow sponges growing on the Frederiksted Pier in #StCroix! 📸 by @nadege_aoki © #WHOI

Excellent work from @nadege_aoki, Aran Mooney et al. from @WHOI: playing back healthy coral reef sound increases coral larvae settlement! 🪸 This has huge impact on coral reef restoration worldwide and the billion of people that depend directly on them!🌍

Today is a big day! The first work from my PhD thesis and my first first-author publication is out in @RSocPublishing We demonstrated for the first time that playing reef sounds to coral larvae can increase their settlement rates royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs…

If you ever need someone to get some super cool footage of you diving, Dan is the man

Also check out this awesome video made by our own Dan Mele covering this work! youtu.be/VIaGVetGnRg?si…

Really enjoyed getting to sit down and chat with Maddie about this and get into some of the nuances of how we might use sound enrichment to help coral reefs (spoiler alert: it's not a silver bullet, but we see great potential with this technique)

It was great to talk to @nadege_aoki about her team's recent study on coral soundscapes! Check out the radio segment here (and tune in weekdays at 11am to The Conversation 🤙 for more segments like this) hawaiipublicradio.org/the-conversati…

Very excited to be presenting at #OSM24 this morning in the reef restoration session on the topic of using acoustic enrichment to boost coral larval settlement rates. I’m speaking in 206-207 at 9:50 - hope to see lots of folks there!

Folks, I’ve been diving In submersibles (eg the HOV Alvin) for 25 years. In general, the simpler the tool the better. A submersible is better off with robust, uncomplicated hardware.

My first podcast!

MIT- @WHOI Joint Program PhD Nadège Aoki (@nadege_aoki) dropped by the To Dive For podcast to discuss her PhD journey and her research on coral reef acoustics, examining how marine organisms use sound to decide where to live. spoti.fi/3pJktid

I’m so excited to be in the Maldives this week participating in a workshop organized by the @WorldBank to explore digital technology solutions for local climate resilience. I’ll be presenting on the use of passive acoustics for coral reef monitoring.

Exciting news today - I passed my general exam! I was definitely nervous about my preparation going in and have struggled w/feelings of imposter syndrome throughout grad school so it’s a huge relief to hit this milestone and feel empowered move forward on my dissertation
