What do you call that feeling when you’re hanging out near a new building and you suddenly feel like one of those tilt-shifted figurines in those architectural drafting plans with all the stock figures, and you’re the one with the headphones standing near the water feature?

New journal article of mine out today in The Soundtrack, about Foley and psychoanalysis in Guy Maddin’s “Brand Upon the Brain!” intellectdiscover.com/content/journa…

Cuspy sanguine with rising phlegmatic and choleric moon.

Excited to share this article I wrote, about nineteenth-century opera via telephone!

Learn more about the phenomenon of listening to #opera by telephone in TRIC 45.1! Matthew Tomkinson (@mtthwtmknsn) focuses on 19th century British Columbia, and a 1985 production of The Pirates of Penzance: bit.ly/tric451f

Sound Studies shoutout to my Uber driver in Montreal who left-panned his audio so that it was only coming out of the driver’s side speaker. Sonic thinking in practice.

My music collaborator and I were on CBC this morning to discuss our upcoming live score for Murnau’s “Faust” — have a listen at the link below if you’re interested! cbc.ca/listen/live-ra…

This confirms my suspicion that “of” is the hardest working word in poetry.

It's the world as a burst intestine; the always of the slow alphabet of rain; the rhyme of 'memory' and 'emery' after the trickling from 'air' to 'hair'; and the interior of those final three lines, the sparking, the incredible harm.

Would you rather ride 100 book-sized horses, or write 1 horse-sized book?

Dear music nerds, audiophiles, sound studies scholars, and media theory enthusiasts: I’m excited to share this essay I wrote for (@soundingoutblog) called “Echoes of the Latent Present: Listening to Lags, Delays, and Other Temporal Disjunctions.” soundstudiesblog.com/2024/02/26/the…

Has anyone ever taught an anti-work class in university that actually gave students a right to be lazy? I’d love to teach such a course.

Just drove past this glorious marquee above my local cinema: Wonka Migration Trolls Aquaman

Vancouver folks: Excited to share that I'll be performing an original live score to Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS (1927) at the VIFF Centre, Oct. 22nd, 2023 — with my pal @andy_____z ft. post-industrial rhythms, soaring utopian motifs, and dystopian drones. viff.org/whats-on/metro…

"I must interrupt to say that 'X' is what exists inside me. 'X' — I bathe in that this. It's unpronounceable. All I do not know is in 'X.' Death? death is 'X.' But much life too for life is unpronounceable." — Clarice Lispector (from Água Viva)
