There was nothing more soothing, than falling asleep to our ‘Rock-Bank’ stud merino & poll merino mother ewes & baby lambs bleating/communicating with one another, last night.
‘Rock-Bank’ principal John/Dad could possibly have had his replacement son by his No.1, lead, once-in-a-lifetime superfine merino working sire/stud ram RB “Blue” - in the form of a top twin boy lamb born this morning. Happy days! @krisifrost @jeremyk96376987
We just had our No.1 lamb born so far for ‘Rock-Bank’ “Lambing 2024” - a merino ewe lamb by our lead, once-in-a-lifetime superfine working sire RB “Blue”! It’s incredible the potency of how he replicates himself in his progeny. @krisifrost @jeremyk96376987
So, we’ve started pre-lamb crutching the stud ‘Rock-Bank’ merino & poll merino breeding ewes. Our crutcher quipped, “they’ve got solid frames about them. Also, I’m taking my time, because they’re such good ewes.” Bless.
A GOOD Friday… we received our ASBV’s & Indexes from Sheep Genetics yesterday, on our 2024 merino and poll merino stud display rams/keepers. We were very happy. How good is it when the figures match the visual traits/raw data.
So, all of our 2023 drop RB young rams & ewes (merinos and poll merinos) raw data was submitted to Sheep Genetics today for the “run”. Next up, we will be Genomics blood testing. We do both to improve the accuracy of our ASBV’s & Indexes.
So, we ducked over to one of the local Balmoral Sire Evaluation Trial sites mid-morning to have a look over & sticky-beak @ the merino & poll merino young ewe progeny on display.
Just did one of the more important tasks for our ‘Rock-Bank’ operation… digitally completed our 2024 ewe pregnancy scanning booking form for our stud merinos & poll merinos. D-Day will be in April.
A busy, fulfilling day here @ ‘Rock-Bank’… weighing, scanning & recording PWWT, PFAT and PEMD on our 2023 drop young ewes.
Yay! We, Rock-Bank Merino and Poll Merino Stud featured in the @stockandland list of top Vic. merino ram sale averages for 2023 - we’re No.3 with an average of $3,378!
Our old, working dog Wal has become quite lazy & is half in retirement mode. LOL.
A little bit of a lunch hour debrief. The mob of adult stud fine wool poll merino ‘Rock-Bank’ ewes we’re presently shearing, are averaging 6-6.5kgs skirted fleeces. Go girls!
So, I clocked off work @ 8.30pm yesterday. I was covered with dust from drafting off stud ewes from lambs in the yards, for shearing today. But, it’s ok. & all worth it - because of the white gold our merinos & poll merinos produce, in the form of wool.
A little brag… I picked Without A Fight to win the 2023 Melbourne Cup.
Breeding bliss… we’ve been classing our stud merino & poll merino ewes - we’ve got 201 elite ewes for an A.I. program in the summer of 2024.
We classed & sorted up our 2023 weaner merino & poll merino ewes today. They’re tops! We were also at war with our ear tag applicator. If it wasn’t so ridiculous, it would be hilarious. LOL.
So, as part of our Sheep Genetics Merino Select ASBV’s project, our merino & poll merino lambs were weighed and had their WWT (Weaning Weights) recorded. We split up our ram & ewe lambs @ weaning. Overall, we’re happy with their early growth and progress.
