In light of the homophobic attack on Holland I really want to take a moment to remind kpop fans that there are still many deeply conservative political elements in SK and that activists have been fighting tooth and nail for YEARS to even get an anti discrimination bill passed.
Anyways I say all of this to emphasize calling the person who attacked Holland a "hater" and saying things like "I can't believe people are still homophobic in 2022 in SK" negates and undermines the very real harm that many LGBTQ+ Koreans and people still face globally.
The fact that Holland was even attacked while walking around in Itaewon (known for being one of the LGBTQ+ friendly areas in Seoul) is wild in itself and should once again go to show that unfortunately there is still a lot of stigma surrounding being openly LGBTQ+ there.
These efforts have mostly been met with severe pushback by conservative Christians who still carry a large amount of political power and have even crossed over into violence against attendees at events like Seoul and Incheon Pride in past years with the police looking on.
