Last week my ELD 1 students interviewed staff using W questions and Do/Does questions. This week, they presented their responses in front of their classmates. So proud of their growth and willingness to present in English😊 #ells #whs #fcps
Educational pet peeve: monolinguals talking about ELLs’ abilities while using deficit based language
Remind your English Learners today and every day that: Bilingualism is an ASSET. Biculturalism is an ASSET. Biliteracy is an ASSET. We celebrate and 💗 English Learners with all of their wonderful ASSETS.
Incorporating breaks to prevent students from reaching a point of frustration and to deter disruptive behaviors #ells #hsesol #esol
Great question. It depends on the goal.
Strategies for Helping Students Motivate Themselves -from @LarryFerlazzo edut.to/3kCL3XP
Created this scaffold last night for a few of my readers and got to try it out today 🤩🔤 The proud smiles from these readers made the late night worth it 🗣️🔤 #cognitiveloadtheory #speechtoprint 🧠
I keep it on my board, in my table space at eye level so I never loose focus of what I should do to maximize my newcomers language acquisition. Thanks @ValentinaESL ! #BoostingAchievement @DrCarolSalva
Especially important right now. 👇🏽 acculturation NOT assimilation. #TeachingFeeling #teachingkids #teachingresources #teachingideas
Think🤔 Does the environment foster assimilation or acculturation? Let’s step away from the melting pot idea. Embrace individuality, self-identity & preserve culture. #satchat #educhat #DiversityandInclusion #educhat #ellchat #teachingELs #edutwitter

Newcomers had to write complete sentences about the words they generated on the board (see previous post). Whoever wrote the most - won! Winner came in at 116 words! Now I need to think of a prize...@FISD_EB
A challenge facing many of us who teach ELL Newcomers- which doesn’t receive as much recognition or appreciation as it should - is the constant influx of new students throughout the year. I love teaching ELLs, but I find that this particular dynamic takes a lot of energy
Quick de-escalation phrases for kids: You’re not in trouble. I want to hear your side. I’m not mad at you. What happened? How can I help you right now? Let’s talk about this.
The thing people often don’t talk about in teaching is how much of it is a performance. No matter what’s going on in your life you stand up in front of those kids and perform and if you’re ill or something challenging is going on in your personal life, that’s exhausting.
Can newcomers write a #personalnarrative? You bet! Beginners tell their stories by illustrating a graphic novel, including the elements of plot. Then they point at the pictures and search for words to describe what is happening. @FISD_EB @Seidlitz_Ed
