A sincere thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of MVC's #PreopTestingWeek! Your collaboration has been pivotal in advancing appropriate preoperative testing for patients in Michigan. For further information on #preoptesting, please visit: ritesizetesting.org
Despite research evidence that unnecessary preop testing is common, there isn't a clear answer about why it occurs - to increase the rate of appropriate testing for patients, talking to your care teams is an essential first step to understand the local problem. #PreopTestingWeek
Aligning preoperative testing expectations across clinical teams and actively engaging physicians has been shown to deliver optimal outcomes. Visit the RITE-Size website to download customizable resources to share with providers: ritesizetesting.org #PreopTestingWeek
Habits are the hardest behaviors to change. That's why concerns surrounding changes to #preoptesting practices are so common. Together, using evidence-based, data-driven recommendations, we can increase the rate of patients receiving the appropriate amount of preop testing.
Many providers see no harm in ordering preoperative tests and believe there are no benefits to reducing testing rates; however, data suggest otherwise. Reducing testing for patients undergoing low-risk surgery has proven benefits for patients and providers. #PreopTestingWeek
This #preoptesting paper found wide intrahospital variations in testing which suggest that most hospitals may lack institution-wide preoperative protocols and be more dependent on individual clinician practice patterns. Read the manuscript now: bit.ly/3OilPIe
There is significant variation in preop testing rates across Michigan hospitals - averages range from 10%-97%. That level of variation suggests hospitals should revisit their institutional standards to ensure alignment with current testing recommendations. #PreopTestingWeek
Questioning standard practices is vital for improvement. Preoperative testing in low-risk surgeries often lacks clinical benefits yet remains common in Michigan hospitals. Eliminating these unnecessary tests can significantly enhance the value of surgical care. #PreopTestingWeek
MVC and its partners recently established RITE-Size - an initiative to support hospitals in increasing the rate of appropriate preoperative testing prior to low-risk surgeries. Visit the new RITE-Size website now to learn more: ritesizetesting.org #PreopTestingWeek
