Mike Karels was a giant in the BSD world. He was part of the original team of developers in Berkeley in the 80s, and 40 years later was contributing to FreeBSD. He was also my release engineering deputy, and just last week agreed to be release engineer for FreeBSD 13.4-RELEASE.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mike Karels, a pivotal figure in shaping FreeBSD. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to the Foundation and to share memories of Mike. hubs.li/Q02zHlrz0

1. I'm legit shocked by the design of @Meta's new notification informing us they want to use the content we post to train their AI models. It's intentionally designed to be highly awkward in order to minimise the number of users who will object to it. Let me break it down.

FreeBSD 14.1-BETA1 is now available: lists.freebsd.org/archives/freeb… Please test this! Especially if you have a desktop/laptop system -- some changes just landed recently affecting audio and we'd like to make sure nothing broke (if necessary we'll pull them from 14.1).

A short time ago I created the FreeBSD releng/13.3 branch and started FreeBSD 13.3-BETA1 builds. If I got all the details right, you should be able to install FreeBSD 13.3-BETA1 by Monday. Please plan on testing this! The more people test, the faster bugs get found and fixed.

I think the fastest I got the FreeBSD kernel booting in Firecracker was 21 ms. NetBSD is now at 18 ms... I need to go back and address some more of the issues I noticed but didn't get around to fixing. Anyone know what the current record for Linux is? Last I heard was ~50 ms.

I am very saddened by this news. Niklaus got me into CS since I became fascinated by the beauty of his language designs and compiler architectures. And later he became the guiding mentor for my doctoral studies at ETH.

We lost a titan of programming languages, programming methodology, software engineering and hardware design. Niklaus Wirth passed away on the first of January. We mourn a pioneer, colleague, mentor and friend.
