Genuinely quite interesting thread

NEW PAPER: Ever wondered why insects fly in all sorts of crazy patterns around lights at night? So did we! We set about recording flying insects to work out what's going on. I'll summarise what we found in this 🧵. Spoiler: We don't think they confuse lights with the moon.

Congrats Douglas! Doing us Panthers proud!

Very cool to see this paper of Douglas Kamaru, a graduate from the course I'm the lead tutor in. This is exactly why we aim to train young, bright conservationists from biodiversity rich developing countries! Congrats Douglas! @7465166281614ae science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Publishing absence is not something you often see. It might not be the result you wanted, but well done to get this out @cesearle !

A new paper led by @cesearle presents a lack of evidence for #cheetah presence in #Tanzania’s Selous-Nyerere landscape. Based on spoor & camera trap surveys conducted from 2020 to 2022 in addition to enquiries with PA management staff & tourism operators: doi.org/10.1017/S00306…

Congrats @ElisaSeres!

How does a species balance the costs and benefits of living in a group through time allocation? A new paper published in @SpringerNature, led by WildCRU’s @ElisaSeres explores this question in a study of #Ethiopian #wolves. bit.ly/3R0loWz 1/3

Was great to be part of this. It's something most us have experienced in the review process, so hopefully this could provide some guidance.

Just accepted (@RSocPublishing #procB). We hope this is a useful paper for folks using AIC and grappling with interpretation: "Practical advice on variable selection and reporting using AIC" ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:3…
