Twitter is a completely different experience when you're in good group chats versus when you aren't. The group chat lets people participate in a more complex social experience without necessarily being at the center of it. It is very much like an alcove inside a great hall.

Communicating via text is often more effective than via speech, at least in my experience. While people generally speak faster than they type and listen faster than they read, a written sentence can be re-read anytime which leads to less backtracking and faster dialogue.
Not only do connections between participants get established more easily in a real-time text chat context, but also faster and in a way that more accurately represents the the person behind the screen.
An unexpected but beautiful effect of real-time text chatting is that it, by design, nudges participants to behave in a pro-social way. Seeing someone's idiosyncrasies through the way they type opens up the heart a little to empathy and makes love and friendship seem less hard.
