I am proud that I read books despite them being written by people whom I do not strictly speaking like on a personal level. I am even more proud that I can say I sometimes read books despite them being written by people who do not like me on a personal level.

Re. the talk about the SecDef nominee's tatoos--it just dawned on me that I might be the only person in the entire DoD who teaches a course exclusively on the Crusades. *Might*--I could be wrong, but I don't think so at the moment... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Darn tootin'! I teach Vegetius in three electives here at CGSC: The History of Military Thought, Medieval European Warfare, and Warfare in the Age of the Crusades. And nice to see the shout-out to my book on John of Salisbury!! @HistorianAbel @IskanderRehman

“There is a glaring absence of Vegetius in most curriculums — an unfortunate form of historical amnesia in need of remedy,” writes @IskanderRehman ow.ly/VRPB30sHwBn

Voted! Now, back to medieval warfare.

The medieval period is fascinating. And what's the point of teaching enlightenment or renaissance thinkers if you only have a weird Disney caricature of what they are reacting against?

...taking a piece of the True Cross he'd found in the Kremlin with him!

On this day in 1812 Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow began. By its end the proud army of over 400,000 that had crossed the Neman in June was reduced to less than 20,000. Contrary to popular belief, the army suffered most of its casualties on the advance to Moscow, not the retreat

Indexing requires tough choices, but some are easy and even fun. Such as the decision to delete freaking Thucydides' name from the term list--felt so good that I want to do it again!

Finished, and submitted for review! Massive relief.

Philadelphia passport control is horrible, horrible. Massive lines, hardly anyone working, no automation. Not as bad as Chicago-O'Hare, but close.
