Folks, Quite a few new followers lately and also some life updates, so it is time for a reintroduction! I'm Max Stoneking and I am a 25-year-old physical therapist, coach, and triathlete. Physical Therapy I recently started working in the orthopedic setting with Performance…

Recency When starting back up with training from an offseason or a break, the mind tends to want to remember the feelings of the previous season's peak. But it is easy to forget the feelings of having to take the small steps necessary to get back to or go beyond that level.…

At the very least, you might benefit mentally from keeping moving. Some injuries might be a wake up call that you need to tone it down a lot. But most would benefit from shifting load somewhere else or training other limbs. If you play your cards right, 2-4 weeks is a common…

Biggest mistake I see rehabbing an injury: Getting out of shape while you “wait” on whatever to heal Bike/row/ incline walk Recovery is easier when you’re more fit

The path to returning from injury is often far from linear... but having steps laid out in front of you can be a helpful guide. Tomorrow on Study & Sport, we break down the graphic below in more detail and provide practical examples of what each step might mean for you.

Best 1650 freestyle I ever did I wanted to keep going. It is a mix of being at a physical peak and having the right mental head space. It just hurts less when you're going well. 🤷‍♂️

The ironic thing about endurance sports is that your fastest races usually end up being the easiest ones. Every time I’ve set a personal record, it’s never been that much of a struggle. Not at all surprising considering the 🧠 and body are inseparable.

Some of the best practice I have been able to get with the idea of patience is working with athletes after an ACL surgery. Great lessons to learn that extend into my coaching and other clinical encounters.

One of the tougher parts about helping someone return to running training after an injury is holding them back. It’s always tempting to tell your client to let it rip on their next workout, but timing is key. Do it too early, and they could lose significant time to re-injury.…

The Resilient Athlete Series Part II This week we cover popular types of injuries amongst endurance athletes. Tendons, bone stress, knee pain, and more! Each one has a few special considerations. You won’t want to miss it! Now available on Study & Sport 😀

🎯 The situations that make you say “ah crap 😩 “ are usually informative of how to keep progressing. Not to say that you’ll never get a win. You need those. But this year has shown me that you need a few of those discomfort cycles too.

How learning actually happens:

If swimmers are struggling with their lateral alignment and the body is moving side to side, starting with the head is simplest way to start getting change. If swimmers can learn to keep their head stable a LOT of problems disappear.

A good Benadryl story— Was over at a friend’s house in high school. He had a cat and I’m allergic. Took a Benadryl when I got home because I was a mess. Woke up the next morning for swim practice and could hardly coordinate my arms in the water. Coma-level sleep Ridiculous…

I'm covering the hospital at night and its WILD how many people use BENADRYL as a sleep aid What a terrible medication to be used for sleep Here on X people are using fancy forms of magnesium, theanine, glycine, baking soda, which carry way better safety profiles Way ahead

Making a field trip to see the racing up close was a huge step as a coach. Perfect way to wrap up 2024 for all involved. Back to getting everyone prepared for something even greater in 2025!

If you walk around the finish line of a high profile marathon, you'll hear a lot of things but none more prevalent than "I felt fine aerobically, but my legs!" 😂😂 Takes a lot of work to build a chassis that can go fast for a long time!

CONFUSED coaches copy elite programs' workouts blindly. CONFIDENT coaches build plans that fit their actual athletes. Your team needs YOUR leadership, not someone else's template.
