All languages covey information at a similar rate when spoken (39bits/s). Languages that are spoken faster have less information density per syllable! One of the coolest results in linguistics.

Really great to have had @JanaDcl at @wu_vienna for a few days, both to work on a joint project and deliver an interdisciplinary talk on the language of chronic pain. Thanks for joining us!

Today's the 120th anniversary of a key moment in the history of English honorifics. On Nov. 10, 1901, the Springfield (Mass.) Sunday Republican suggested that "a void in the English language" may be filled by "Ms." (pronounced "Mizz") as an alternative to "Miss" or "Mrs." 🧵 1/13

Just read this great paper by Fang Xie which builds on our work in variational politeness and this time looks at trends across the UK, Aus, and HK. Further evidence that politeness is linked w/ urbanisation (but moderated by pragmatic transfer). link.springer.com/article/10.100…

There’s a real buzz in our department this week: @LancasterGhana’s Emmanuel Arthur & Patrick Amfo Anim are here as part of our Erasmus exchange. Enjoyed two great lectures, one focusing on Ghana’s HE landscape, the other on language and communication in the country. 🇬🇭

AI tools are getting so powerful. Today, I created an AI-powered podcast, where two AI robots discuss three of the main tools of #AntConc, using only the official help guide as a source. It's not perfect, but still quite fascinating. See what you think. shows.acast.com/laurence-antho…

I feel the need to reshare this PSA about Gricean Maxims. I swear I am constantly encountering experts in language & communication who misinterpret Grice. And to be fair that’s entirely Grice’s own fault

PSA the Gricean Maxims are not rules that we routinely follow or should expect other people to follow. They are generalizations that underly an interpretative logic for interaction that allows us to generate meaning when people flout them, which we/others do all the time!

To my friends & colleagues in the USA: please consider submitting your spoken conversations to the compilation of a new dataset! The @LANA_corpus team are especially looking for males aged 40+, but are open to all. As a bonus, it's paid pretty well too. 🇺🇸 sites.google.com/view/share-you…
