Truly grateful to my friends and colleagues at @auditedmedia, who have been stalwarts in @journal_list's trust.txt transparency initiative. If you're interested in what we're up to...

Many thx to @auditedmedia for supporting @journal_list and our trust.txt system. By engaging ~1,100 media members, AAM is sending a collective trust signal that will elevate dependable news sites and distinguish journalists from misinformation peddlers. bit.ly/aam-trust

Jeff Bezos didn’t understand why Washington Post editor Marty Baron needed so many new editors. So, Marty Baron got creative: nytimes.com/2023/07/22/bus… A profile of Jeff Bezos, newspaper baron, with @katie_robertson

A must-read rant by @knightfdn’s @jimbrady on how newspapers treat digital subscribers — like Kafkaesque cancelation processes. Sadly too many public media and digital news sites do the same thing, like having to call or email to update a credit card or even INCREASE a donation!

There are many reasons newspapers -- for the most part -- have not made successful leaps to digital. And the changing business model is obviously a huge one. But user experience and the way many treat their customers is one we don't discuss nearly enough. I got the message below…

I’ve long had a rallying cry that fact-checking keeps growing. It’s no longer true, according to the new census from ⁦@markstencel⁩ Erica Ryan and Joel Luther of ⁦@ReportersLabreporterslab.org/misinformation…

New findings below from the Duke @ReportersLab's 10th annual fact-checking census -- especially concerns about how to keep pace with mis-/disinformation around the world. Much to discuss next week at @factchecknet #GlobalFact10 in Seoul.

The @ReportersLab's 10th annual fact-checking census is out. We count 417 sites that verify + debunk claims in +100 countries, 69 languages. But the fact-checking tally is leveling off, even as concerns about manipulation, lies and dangerous hoaxes grow. bit.ly/2023fact-check…

The more things change… This column by @WarOnDumb about Democratic Party infighting in Alabama reminded me of @newsmanual’s 2019 series for @replyall, “The Real Enemy” (episodes 152-154). That three-parter is on my list of best political reporting in the past decade. Go listen.

Former US Senator @DougJones: “I think it effectively kills the Democratic Party in Alabama if it stands.” al.com/news/2023/05/a…

I have a story in TAL this week. Working on it entirely transformed my view of love. I cried making it. Actually I cried a couple times making it. But I also laughed my ass off and got butterflies in my stomach

How much can you trust whether somebody who you think is close to you really is close to you? @SaiduTTJ has been thinking about that question since a visit with some of his childhood friends. bit.ly/40zUqHi

Many thanks to @auditedmedia and @DCNorg for showcasing @journal_list's news transparency project....

Transparency = credibility: This article from @auditedmedia + @DCNorg features JournalList and our trust.txt system as one of "3 tools to make media companies stand out in the age of AI." (DM if you want to know more about our media transparency system.) bit.ly/3FDMtbU

One of fact-checking's dangers? You become "more annoying at parties," warns @africacheck's Kirsten Cosser. Other fact-checkers will rate this claim "Mostly Correct" on Africa Check's 8-point scale. ("Mostly" because we're not really SO bad.) bit.ly/3Ce1aRo

This is tremendous news and a major commitment to fact-checking.

“Fact deserts” in 29 states meant many politicians’ statements during the 2022 campaign weren’t scrutinized by local fact-checkers. This overview by our @ReportersLab at @Duke_DeWitt is the first of two LocalFact studies. (Many thx to the @knightfdn for its support!)

Politicians in most states got little scrutiny from local fact-checkers in this year's elections. Why? Because in 29 states there weren’t any. A new study from the Duke @ReportersLab examines these "fact deserts" and the state of local fact-checking. bit.ly/fact-deserts

In the week of @politifact’s 15th anniversary, it’s worth noting that we also created a sustained effort to hold presidents and governors accountable for their campaign promises. It takes a lot of work and isn’t very sexy. But it is vital accountability journalism.

My latest @PolitiFact: From the Biden Promise Tracker: Biden orders $10,000 to $20,000 in student loan debt forgiveness. Not everything he'd promised, but a major step nonetheless. Rating: Compromise. bit.ly/3zPu0Fj
