The reason why taxes are high and nothing works "many of our most important services are being delivered by private companies, often owned by equity firms extracting enormous profits"

Rather surprisingly the Morning Star have given my book a good review. Includes this tremendous sentence: "He is not a Marxist and offers no class analysis, but it would by asinine to dismiss his critique on that basis." morningstaronline.co.uk/article/uks-el…

Guy Singh-Watson, who broadly supports the government’s plan, said: “Land in the French Vendée – where I have owned a 120-hectare (300-acre) farm for the past 15 years – is less than a 10th of the price of equivalent land in Devon theguardian.com/environment/20…

Can I have a heat pump in a flat? Sometimes individual heat pumps will work if the external unit can fit on the balcony, but it's not ideal. So what happens in high density urban areas? In this case, a communal ground source heat pump serves the block. theguardian.com/environment/20…

The ZEV mandate is working, days @colinwalker79 To change now would undermine investments the industry has made. Surely, the laggards have to feel the pain to change their investment plans

Me in today's @thetimes on the noise we're hearing about industry calling on Gov to weaken the ZEV mandate In a nutshell: don't, it's working Plenty of manufacturers are meeting, even exceeding, the targets - so there's no case for any tinkering thetimes.com/uk/transport/a…

some journalists appear to be settling down and reporting on politics from prospective of policies, plans and actions and not just the gossip - a small sign that the ministers are getting with work

Good to read a helicopter view with a 650-year prospective

A counter argument to the one sided hysteria over the proposed changes to inheritance tax relief on inherited agricultural land. Farmers have hoarded land for too long. Inheritance tax will bring new life to rural Britains theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

this would be a high step and surprise a lot of people!

Public Demands Starmer Resurrects Leveson Press Corruption Inquiry Amid Collapse in Trust in UK Media – Byline Times bylinetimes.com/2024/11/12/pol…

Show us you're different @UKLabour

Nothing can fundamentally change in Britain, until the media changes. And Labour is falling into a trap on this. The Government told Byline Times it has “no plans” to restart part 2 of the Leveson press inquiry. New polling shows 52% want it relaunched. bylinetimes.com/2024/11/12/pol…

Kevin Maguire says "Jeremy Clarkson is defending his own tax dodge" & points out figures like Rothermere (the Daily Mail owner), Paul Dacre (the Mail Group editor in chief) & James Dyson have got lots of lands because they thought it would allow them to avoid tax #GMB

clean up needed on sector #1

The @FT has written a story about Taiwanese energy costs. But it's hard not to read this graph as a story about the UK - and the £3.5 billion penalty British industry faces. Prepare for some graphs.. 🧵 ft.com/content/cfd77e…

there are loads of efficiency savings for UK government to make in public sector. they could reduce subcontracting to private sector and take those responsibilities in-house youtu.be/1Fcy3CuTsYE?si…

Lessons for a minority...

As a Brit, I've been watching the American election results with sorrow for my American friends. Some are comparing it to the Brexit vote here, imagining if we'd voted for Brexit twice. But here's the thing... in a sense, we did. And here are some lessons from it. 🧵

what counts towards a nation's GDP? put aside, GDP is a bad metric of a nation's health, but does this shed, bump up the GDP by £100m? theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/n…

Who is the Minister for Energy Efficiency? Half the efforts of Britain Net Zero will be around energy efficiency. Is it getting half our effort and resources?

A joint Dispatches and @DailyMirror investigation reveals that many private properties owned by the Duchy of Cornwall have the worst energy efficiency rating possible, with some tenants claiming they’re being seriously let down by their landlord - Prince William.

While our media remains so closely coupled to American culture we'll never understand the countries in the EU, nor the EU

our cities need fewer polluting vehicles

More than 15,000 children were admitted to hospital across London last year with breathing difficulties. @BBCNews The problem is traffic congestion and air pollution on busy community roads like High Streets & Red Routes. Council imposed LTNs drastically worsen the status quo.

It's just clicked that land used for solar panels can free land currently used for ethanol. And some solar on farmland can be mixed with a second use - another bonus

I believe if we converted just half the land used to grow corn for ethanol, we could power the entire United States! Ethanol sunlight to energy: <1% PV sunlight to energy: ~20%

Is there a difference in divorce rate between Republican and Democrat senators? The answer is... quite complicated

Really is incredible to think that the Tories announced compensation for victims of two scandals, then did nothing to arrange the money. Labour has had to put aside a massive chunk of the money they secured yesterday to fulfil a promise the previous government made.
