So I tried to build a tech company from Norway and here’s what happened: 1. Two years of building without almost any money/funding, better part of a year without salary 2. Raise VC and become one of Norway’s first unicorns 3. Face unrealized gains wealth tax bill of many x my…

Here’s how insane things have gotten in Norway: The Socialist Party has a “wall of shame” in their office with “rich people who have left Norway” - due to the outrageous taxes they’re now being charged. Who do you find on that wall? Startup founders like @hagaetc - who was…

Big O behaves somewhat differently on a GPU. Algorithms that are order n, n log n, or n^2, may become order 1 on a GPU. I've done matrix multiplication, FFTs, and sorting in order 1 using GpuScript. But AI changes everything. Matrix inversion and singular value decomposition are…

The problem with software is that we can’t visualize the edifice of its complexity in 3D space. You’d never say “I can build the Empire State Building in a weekend”, but you hear versions of “I can write stack overflow in 2 days” on the regular 🫠

sqlite is a file. pg uses a heap on disk; neon remixxed it with a log structured merge tree, basically which is like writing in memory and flushing the buffer to disk later, cleaning it up with compaction vacuuming etc

I think the potential for a real paradigm shift is possible with SQLite in SaaS. So much of the complexity that comes from running large, distributed apps stem from setting up and managing MySQL/PostgreSQL clusters and replication. This can all be much simpler.

The wealthy get wealthier because it's easy to invest with infinite patience when you are enjoying your daily life: time to read, write, think deeply; time to train, study, get stronger; time to laugh, bond, spend time with people you love; time to step back, regroup, do better.

This has been a fascinating conversation going deep on advanced topics such as encryption, passkeys and identity in a local-first context. I learned a lot. It’s crazy how powerful the web has become.

Episode #17 is out. Kyle Simpson (@getifyX) on local-first identity, encryption, passkeys and authn.

Letting creative people just do their job -- without the constant interruptions and diverting obligations -- isn't just great for productivity, it's also wonderful for morale. Because nothing beats solving problem together with talented colleagues and shipping great software.
