Thrilled to be featured in @civilserviceworld, talking about my career journey from the civil service to civil society - and why the #OnlineSafetyAct was, and remains, a cause worth fighting for. 😊

👇This. And there's also a small but important para in the #DarziReview about #socialmedia and worsening mental health outcomes. If the Government is going to take a prevention-focused approach to delivering its #NHS Mission, @SciTechgovuk has a key role to play. #OnlineSafetyAct
Good to see mental health & in particular #SuicidePrevention feature strongly in Darzi report. Huge turnaround in policy focus - credit to bereaved families whose stories have swept away shame & silence that previously surrounded this topic. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/66e1b49e…

Going somewhere nice? Don't lose touch: @osanetwork.bsky.social
The Prime Minister has indicated the #OnlineSafetyAct will be reviewed given the role #socialmedia is playing in riots and violence across the UK. The latest @OSA_Network explainer from @EssexLawSchool experts Prof Lorna Woods & @alexkantoniou sets out why that is necessary.
🚨 NEW: in light of the online dimension to the spread of violence across the UK in the past fortnight, Prof Lorna Woods and @alexkantoniou @EssexLawSchool analyse the limits of the #OnlineSafetyAct - and the powers it grants to @ofcom - to deal with it.⬇️ onlinesafetyact.net/analysis/disin…
Our charity ambassador Jay Flynn talked openly to The Guardian yesterday about his journey from homelessness to viral Quizmaster Tap below to discover more 👇 theguardian.com/society/articl…
The world's richest man openly inciting violence, sharing neo-nazi accounts and justifying racist lynch mobs, while his platform deliberately amplifies misinformation to directly fuel hatred which is ruining lives, without any consequence or contrition. Truly dystopian.
The owner of this platform weighs in on the unrest currently unfolding in the UK.
The far right has moved online, where its voice is more dangerous than ever theguardian.com/politics/artic…
This week’s riots aren’t happening in a vacuum. We’re living and breathing on platforms that billionaires have optimised for outrage. This is the world that social media made. My piece for @ObserverUK with contributions from the great @mariaressa + more theguardian.com/media/article/…
It's heartbreaking to see this. Repairing the physical damage in Sunderland will be a huge job but what's really important is the services they provide. The wonderful team at @sunderlandCAB are determined to continue being there for the community - they will need all our support
Last night Citizens Advice Sunderland's office was badly damaged following riots in the city. We're working with the team in Sunderland to provide support to them and help them be there for the people who need advice going forward. Our services are closed on weekends (1/2)
If ever there was a candidate for cost cutting it's our AISI. Far better to feed into and validate US AISI testing if we have a dog in this fight at all. Lab needs to stand back & rethink whole Jackson Pollock mess of Tory desperate spending on AI & focus on both growth & rights
This: "Within 24 hours Dr Jones was able to assemble and publish a map of the key accounts which had spread disinformation. If Musk cared, his team could have done the same. We are entitled to think he doesn’t care." prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/media/67…
This - in the op-ed today from @joshsimonsmp - is spot on. We are where we are but it didn't need to be so. Cross-party arguments for the inclusion of measures on #misinformation and #disinformation in the #OnlineSafetyAct were - repeatedly - rejected by the previous Govt.
People are using algorithms to spread lies and hate online - we’re seeing across the UK how this can tear communities apart. 1/2 thetimes.com/article/308fe6…
I mean - yes, this is great... but where are the representatives of the people / companies who buy and use all this technology? Shouldn't @SciTechgovuk ask users what they want from the tech sector, not just what the tech sector wants to sell to them?
Our tech sector is vital for the economy & public services like the NHS. @PeterKyle & @RachelReevesMP joined leaders from tech companies including @MicrosoftUK @AmazonUK @Apple & @nvidia to discuss continuing to use the power of technology & AI to improve lives across the UK.
It’s now a familiar pattern: a violent attack, innocent people are killed, and X is set alight with unfounded - and often incorrect - accusations about the assailant's identity. My analysis on social media’s role fanning the flames of Southport riots. bbc.com/news/articles/…
Hello @elonmusk - any chance you could take time out of your @KamalaHarris trolling to take a look at this 🧵 and ask whether you are doing enough to stop your platform being used by far right extremists to use lies and conspiracy theories to spread hate and create violence? Or…
🧵1/ Thread on the #Southport anti-migrant and anti-Muslim disinformation and propaganda. In this thread I highlight key spreaders of disinformation, the chronology, and some points about some of the inauthentic activity evident. I will focus on X.
In November far right thugs rioted in Dublin like they are in Southport tonight. Leo Varadkar’s response has stayed with me: “They did not do it because they love Ireland, out of any sense of patriotism, or to protect Irish people. They did it because they’re filled with hate.”
