Most Philippine Begonia species fall into two sections only - Baryandra and Petermannia. And of the ~200 PH species only one is a member of sect Platycentrum - B. halconensis. Until we found a Mindanao population of B. aptera, a species originally described in Indonesian islands.

I am super excited that one of the most interesting finding in my lab was published in @NatureMicrobiol !! Have you heard about the fungus that helps carnivorous plants digest insects? 🐜🍃

During the symposium at @ibc2024 on the use of genomics for studying plant evolution on islands, organized by @evo_island & @JairoPatino_Lab, we had the opportunity to enjoy a marvelous selection of talks! It was truly a great journey through  archipelagos groups & processes 🏝️🧬

Hong-Wun Chen follows at the #big_genera session at #IBC2024 with a presentación about the Begonia megadiverse genus looking into the evolution of the stomata clusters. Begonias have hypodermis. It may help to store water. The characters are phylogenetically correlated.

I just canceled my flight. Won’t be attending #Evol2024. I tried until the last minute with everything I had to obtain my visa, but still couldn’t receive it on time. Thought this would be my first in-person Evolution conference.

An even more powerful picture of different generations of Filipino botanists here in the @ibc2024 #IBC2024. So glad to reunite with our mentors! Global South representation in these scientific conventions matters - big time! Now where are our Southeast Asian friends at? 😁

The power this picture holds. The next-gen Philippine 🇵🇭 botanists during #IBC2024 @ibc2024 We're still incomplete in this pic and there's still a lot of excellent young guns back home! From all over the world, elevating 🇵🇭 botany.
