Question for #geoengineering Twitter: If a rogue actor were to deploy large amounts of SO2 into the stratosphere, how would we (as private citizens) find out? Is there public satellite imagery that would tell us definitively?

The section on climate change in the Musk/Trump "interview" is just *wild* It really is worth reading in full to get a sense of the two men. Just off-the-scale levels of ignorance, denial, misinformation and half-truths. I've put the transcript here docs.google.com/document/d/1OS…

When it comes to climate, the Harris-Walz ticket is stacked. These two leaders are climate champions. They've pushed for clean water, cut pollution, and taken bold action. Oh, and they both love heat pumps and electric school buses. THREAD! theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

You love to see this day-1 message from @KamalaHarris and her presidential campaign: taking on climate change by protecting people and holding polluters accountable.

Congratulating #CrowdStrike for reaching its carbon neutrality targets six years early through its disruption of global air traffic today!

We can't model ourselves out of climate change. Time for bigger deployments of SO2 in the stratosphere.

In the past decade I have seen the media rewriting history by declaring that: (a) the fossil fuel industry "knew" of climate change already in the 1970s and yet those bad people kept the secret from us and that (b) climate scientists have said all along along that carbon…

Really quite devastating presentation on polling from @davidshor on messaging over climate in the US at the Breakthrough Institute’s dialogue in San Francisco. Worst messages tested: electric cars, Green New Deal, frontline communities, ‘Big Oil lied’, climate pollution

Can we intentionally cool the earth? And should we? Luke Iseman of @MakeSunsets says “we’ve done such a poor job at Geo engineering our climate w/ carbon emissions for the last several hundred years, that we now need to geoengineer it in a positive direction to offset that.”…

This is astonishing. 6 GW of battery power on the Calif grid last night. That’s the equivalent of 6 coal plants from next to nothing a few years ago. Many takeaways but one is that when something is small, modular, and easily sited you can deploy it fast.

Two things happened on the @California_ISO grid last night. 1) Battery storage discharge went over 6GW for the first time AND 2) Batteries were the largest source of supply.

The world is greatly underestimating the impact solar will have in the next 20 years. Everybody got it wrong for the last 20 years, and current projections are just as off base. Solar is rapidly improving in every relevant metric. Complementary technologies (like batteries) are…

I don't think people appreciate the dimensions solar is improving in. Conversion efficiency isn't the full story. Yes, conversion efficiency doubled (~10% -> 20%) in the last 20 years, but silicon use per watt fell by 87%! (16g/W -> 2g/W) Longi now has cells that use just half…

What do you think Congress should be working on next week? Guessing it’s not what the @HouseGOP is putting on the calendar.

Climate change is an existential threat, for sure. And I get why people beat the drum so loudly about how f*cked we are and how we need to move a lot more quickly than we’ve been moving. Both are true! But so much of climate communications focuses on the downside: sea level…

Very good article. We should seriously research geoengineering to potentially save lives. "Not treating the symptoms of climate change through something like SRM in the hopes that more suffering would speed up mitigation is arguably morally reprehensible in its own way."

Geoengineering is not a solution to climate change, but it could temporary counteract global warming. Over at The Climate Brink, I explore how it might work, why some folks advocate considering it, and big concerns I have about mitigation deterrence. theclimatebrink.com/p/the-geoengin…

I don't think many people realize how much Biden and Democrats have done to address climate change. The IRA alone—just one of their bills—is expected to 2x the pace of emissions reductions. By 2030 that's equivalent to zeroing out the combined annual emissions of CA and FL.

Every quarter since Q4 2020, @Meta has lost more money in its Metaverse investments (range from $1.83B to $4.2B, total ~$37.5B) than the total global VC investment in carbon removal in 2023 ($1.23b). Not enough $ is going into CDR, relative to its need & potential market size.
