When I worked in homelessness people understood that if you called the police on your clients, your clients had a high chance of being hurt in some way. So we often handled incidents ourselves - often more successfully than calling the cops. That is aboltion.

It's disappointing that the conversation in left media on abolition still has such a surface level analysis that fixates on what the word aboltion communicates (e.g. getting rid of the police is "wacky") instead of the substance of the idea: we need systems of care that work.
