🧵1: A few years ago Steve had the whacky idea to put a contraption together that we could use to listen to reefs in stereo 🎧 I put together a very first prototype we tested out at @lirrf where we heard this for the first time (though not whilst in the water!)

Congratulations 🎉 to #PhD student Carl Santiago for passing his mid-candidature review today! I’m the footage below Carl can be seen surveying one of his @hotel_nemo subjects from his thesis - #Nemo #Marriott @lirrf @UQ_News

New paper: both sharks and humans present a threat to coral reef fishes, but it is difficult to compare the relative impact of these predators. Using models & stereo-video cameras, we found an approaching shark model & human provoked similar levels of predator avoidance behaviour

Dr Chris Goatley ( @UniNewEngland ) and Dr Simon Brandl ( @utsystem ) were awarded The John and Laurine Proud Postdoctoral #Fellowship for 2020. They made the first of two field trips to #LizardIsland in 2022. Learn more - bit.ly/3txG4Jb #coralreef #crypto #reef

Most species of hard #corals on the #GreatBarrierReef take part in a mass spawning event over a short period, once a year. Most people at #LIRS are keen to go out and see it – even if their research has nothing to do with it. Learn more - bit.ly/3EAum6O

What Dr #CaitlinMaling hoped to achieve in book ‘#FishWork’, was to pay tribute to the meticulous work of the researchers by documenting their practices but also hopefully rendering their work – and the reef.lirrf.org/fish-work-a-po… #book #greatbarrierreef

Researchers who are doing aquarium studies that involve spawning can exploit the trigger to stagger spawning times – which is helpful when they have a lot to do in a very short time. Learn more - bit.ly/3EAum6O #coralspawning #coral #lizardisland #research

Dr Chris Goatley (University of New England) and Dr Simon Brandl (University of Texas Austin) project focuses on a group of tiny, camouflaged reef-dwelling fishes known as cryptobenthic fishes or, more simply, cryptos. Learn more - bit.ly/3txG4Jb #lizardisland

The full moon was on 8 November, coral #spawning usually takes place on either the 3rd or 4th night after that. Learn more - bit.ly/3EAum6O #coralreefs #coral #spawning #lizardisland

More than 20 years ago, it was predicted that #coralbleaching would become an annual event globally by 2050 and it would happen even earlier on the #GreatBarrierReef. That prediction shows every sign of being fulfilled.rpb.li/6lstR #climatechange #lizardisland

With your support, scientists can continue their vital work at Lizard Island Research Station. Any amount you give will be greatly appreciated and put to good use.lirrf.org/donate/

Although the likely effects of projected #climatechange are being widely studied, we are just scratching the surface with regard to its long-term consequences.rpb.li/ym1JwD #biodiversity #coralreef #lizardisland

LRS has fifteen boats. All are custom built and powered with fuel-efficient four-stroke outboard motors. All are named in honour of donors or with names suggested by them. lirrf.org/our-programs/r… #lizardisland #research #boats #outboard

Top predators affect mid-level predators (mesopredators), which in turn affect prey fish lower down the chain. This is a trophic (food) cascade.rpb.li/t6l #lizardisland #coralreef #predators #fish

The Australian Centre for Wildlife Genomics at the Australian Museum has developed #DNA collection and extraction protocols that assist vital research on the #CrownofThorns #Starfish (#COTS) – Acanthaster planci. lirrf.org/posts/wildlife… #lizardisland

Our research grants support important and often time-sensitive #coralreef #research projects. They range from a single grant for a particular purpose to a series of grants offered over multiple years that are united by a research theme.rpb.li/tbXO9 #lizardisland

Coral taxonomy is currently based largely on morphology (form, shape) but it is becoming clear that there is much more diversity among corals than is revealed by their appearance. Learn more - bit.ly/3orr253 #lizardisland #greatbarrierreef #acropora
